Sensex October Expiry Outlook: Heavy Call Writing at 74,000 Caps Upside
Last Updated: 29th October 2026 - 02:24 pm
The Sensex October monthly expiry has entered a crucial phase, with the index recovering above 73,800 even as fresh call additions at higher strikes indicate resistance to further gains. While substantial put open interest continues to provide downside support, the declining Put Call Ratio (PCR) suggests that bullish positioning has weakened compared with the earlier session.
The Sensex was trading at 73,819.30, gaining 573.27 points or 0.78%, after recovering from an intraday decline towards 73,700. However, the improvement in price has not been accompanied by a corresponding strengthening in the options data. The all-strike PCR has declined from approximately 1.55 earlier in the session to 1.34, while fresh call additions have increased around 74,000. This divergence indicates that the recovery is encountering fresh overhead resistance.
Open Interest Structure: 74,000 Emerges as the Biggest Hurdle
The latest open interest distribution shows total put OI of approximately 10.77 crore against call OI of 8.02 crore across the strikes. Although put positions continue to dominate, the immediate options structure is becoming more balanced, with the PCR for the 72,700-74,700 strikes standing at 1.006.
The strongest call concentration is visible at the 74,000 strike, with approximately 95 lakh contracts, making it the most significant overhead resistance for the remaining expiry session. Considerable call positions are also visible at 73,800, 73,900 and 74,500.
On the put side, 73,500 carries the highest visible concentration at approximately 79 lakh, followed by 73,000 and 73,700. These levels provide an important support structure if the index slips below 73,800 again.
The concentration of calls at 74,000 and puts at 73,500 establishes a broader options-defined range. However, with the index trading close to 73,800, the immediate contest is likely to remain concentrated between 73,700 and 74,000.
Fresh Call Additions Signal Increasing Resistance
The change in open interest offers an important indication of how positions have developed during the session. Fresh put additions stand at approximately 6.84 crore, compared with fresh call additions of 4.88 crore across the strikes.
The most significant fresh call additions are visible at 74,000, where approximately 75 lakh has been added. Meanwhile, substantial call additions are also present at 73,900 and 73,800.
This concentration is consistent with traders building positions to defend the 74,000 level. Unless these call positions begin unwinding, the index may struggle to sustain a move above 73,900–74,000.
On the other hand, fresh put additions remain concentrated around 73,500 and 73,700, suggesting that traders continue to position for support at lower strikes.
Falling PCR Despite Price Recovery Warrants Caution
The intraday PCR provides one of the clearest indications of changing positioning. After rising towards 1.60 during the morning session, the all-strike PCR has gradually declined to approximately 1.34.
Interestingly, the Sensex has recovered towards 73,800 during the same period after briefly slipping below 73,700. The fact that the index is recovering while the PCR continues to decline suggests that the latest bounce is not receiving the same degree of support from put positioning seen earlier.
This divergence does not necessarily indicate an immediate reversal. However, it increases the importance of price confirmation at higher levels.
If the index moves towards 73,900–74,000 while PCR continues to weaken and call OI increases, the probability of another rejection could rise. Conversely, a sustained move above 73,900 accompanied by unwinding at the 74,000 call strike would improve the prospects of further upside.
Max Pain Returns to 73,800, Keeping the Index Near a Crucial Pivot
The Max Pain chart shows that the level advanced from approximately 73,300 during the opening session to 73,800 before briefly shifting lower to 73,700 in the afternoon.
Following the recovery in the Sensex, Max Pain has returned to 73,800, almost coinciding with the prevailing spot price.
This alignment is significant because 73,800 is also witnessing considerable open interest on both the call and put sides. The level therefore represents a closely contested zone rather than a clear directional advantage for either side.
If the index continues to trade around 73,800, expiry-related position adjustments could keep price movements volatile without producing a sustained trend.
Key Support and Resistance Levels for the Remaining Expiry Session
| Sensex level | Significance |
|---|---|
| 74,200 | Next upside reference after a sustained breakout |
| 74,000 | Strongest Call OI concentration and major resistance |
| 73,900 | Immediate resistance with fresh call additions |
| 73,800 | Max Pain and critical intraday pivot |
| 73,700 | Immediate support and breakdown trigger |
| 73,500 | Major downside support backed by substantial Put OI |
| 73,300 | Next support if 73,500 breaks |
| 73,000 | Stronger lower support with heavy Put OI |
The zone between 73,800 and 74,000 is likely to determine whether the recovery can extend further. A failure to sustain above 73,800 would bring 73,700 back into focus, while a decisive move above 74,000 could trigger covering of bearish positions.
Sensex Expiry Outlook: Recovery Faces a Critical Test
The immediate outlook remains neutral with a cautious positive bias as long as the Sensex sustains above 73,700. However, the sharp concentration of fresh calls at 74,000 and the declining PCR indicate that upside participation is becoming more selective.
For the bullish case to strengthen, the index needs to sustain above 73,900 and subsequently clear 74,000. Such a move, particularly if accompanied by call unwinding, could open the possibility of an extension towards 74,100–74,200.
In contrast, repeated failures near 73,900–74,000 would reinforce the existing resistance structure. A fresh decline below 73,700, accompanied by unwinding in nearby put positions, could accelerate the downside towards 73,500.
The latest price recovery therefore needs to be assessed alongside the changes taking place in the options chain rather than interpreted as an independent bullish signal.
Trading Strategy for Sensex Expiry: Wait for Confirmation Rather Than Chase the Move
For traders looking to participate in the remaining expiry session, the immediate strategy should revolve around confirmation at 73,700 and 74,000.
A sustained move above 73,900 with weakening call OI at 74,000 would favour bullish trades, with 74,000 as the first important hurdle and 74,200 as a possible extended objective if the breakout holds. A defined-risk bull call spread may be considered after checking prevailing option premiums and liquidity.
Alternatively, a decisive break below 73,700, supported by unwinding in put OI, would weaken the immediate bullish structure and could bring 73,500 into focus. A bear put spread would offer a defined-risk approach to such a move.
If the index remains confined between 73,700 and 73,900, traders should avoid forcing directional positions. Rapid premium decay, sudden reversals and expiry-related changes in option sensitivity can make such conditions particularly challenging.
Conclusion: 74,000 Remains the Deciding Barrier
The latest Sensex October expiry data points towards an increasingly contested market despite the index maintaining gains of nearly 0.8%. Put OI remains higher than call OI, but the decline in all-strike PCR from approximately 1.55 to 1.34 and the reduction in change in OI PCR to 1.40 indicate that the earlier bullish positioning has moderated.
The concentration of fresh calls at 74,000 remains the biggest obstacle for further upside, while 73,500 continues to provide a substantial downside support base.
For the remainder of the session, 73,800 is the immediate pivot, 73,900–74,000 forms the decisive resistance zone, and 73,700 remains the first critical support. A breakout above 74,000 could strengthen the recovery, whereas a sustained move below 73,700 would increase the risk of a decline towards 73,500.
With India VIX near 15.5 and the expiry session approaching its final hours, traders should closely monitor call unwinding, put additions and price sustainability before taking fresh directional positions.
