Volkswagen Explores JSW Group Partnership to Expand India Operations
Last Updated: 9th September 2026 - 03:24 pm
Volkswagen is exploring a strategic partnership with JSW Group as the German automaker looks to strengthen its position in India through a wider product portfolio, greater local sourcing and expanded manufacturing operations.
The discussions come at a time when India is becoming increasingly important for Volkswagen, even though the automaker has struggled to build scale after more than two decades in the country. Its market share in India currently stands at around 2%.

What Could the Volkswagen-JSW Partnership Look Like?
The proposed arrangement is likely to give Volkswagen and JSW joint control, with operational responsibilities divided between the two sides.
A governance structure aimed at allowing faster decision-making is also being considered.
Localisation is expected to be an important part of the discussions. Volkswagen and JSW will explore opportunities to source more components within India, share vehicle platforms and increase production capacity.
For JSW, a partnership with Volkswagen would add to its relatively recent entry into India’s passenger vehicle market.
The steel-to-energy group entered the business in 2023 through JSW MG Motor India, its joint venture with China’s SAIC Motor, which sells MG-branded cars in the country.
India Becomes More Important for Volkswagen
Volkswagen’s search for a partner comes as the automaker faces pressure across some of its major global markets.
The company is under pressure from investors to accelerate cost reductions and improve competitiveness as Chinese automakers expand in Europe. It is also dealing with tariff pressures and a prolonged slowdown in China.
India, meanwhile, remains an important market in Volkswagen’s strategy to expand beyond Europe.
The automaker is also involved in a $1.4 billion tax dispute with Indian authorities. The demand, raised in 2024, relates to alleged import tax evasion.
Volkswagen has challenged the demand and maintains that it fully complied with Indian laws and regulations. A court order in the matter is still awaited.
For now, discussions with JSW remain exploratory. The areas being considered a broader product portfolio, deeper local sourcing, platform sharing and additional manufacturing capacity indicate where the two groups see room to work together if the proposed partnership moves forward.
