Why These Stocks Are Rising and Falling Today: Graphite India, Chennai Petroleum & Aegis Logistics Gain; Infosys, Coforge & CarTrade Tech Decline
Last Updated: 10th September 2026 - 12:49 pm
The Indian equity market remained under pressure on Wednesday, September 9, extending its decline for the third straight session amid weak global signals. The Sensex fell more than 500 points, while the Nifty 50 also slipped over 0.50%.
Rising crude oil prices have added to the pressure on equities. Brent crude was trading close to the $100-per-barrel mark, raising concerns about higher inflation, the possibility of tighter monetary policy and its impact on India's growth and inflation outlook.
Meanwhile, a busy IPO pipeline is also drawing funds towards the primary market. This could limit the amount of liquidity available for buying stocks in the secondary market.
Top Gainers for September 9: Graphite India, Chennai Petroleum and Aegis Logistics Gain Up to 17%
Graphite India Rises 16%
Graphite India Ltd emerged as the top gainer in the Nifty 500 index on September 9, 2026. At 11:33 am, the share price was trading at ₹855.90, a gain of 16.57% from its previous close of ₹734.25.
Volumes stood at 240 lakh shares, compared with its 30-day average of 20 lakh shares.
The rally came as a sharp hike in graphite electrode prices announced by US-based GrafTech International. This fuelled expectations of stronger realisations and margins for Indian manufacturers.
Chennai Petroleum Gains Over 7% and Hits All-Time High
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd was trading at ₹1,565 at 11:33 am, reflecting a gain of 7.35%. At this level, the stock was trading at its all-time high.
Volumes stood at 27.2 lakh shares, compared with its 30-day average of 22.9 lakh shares.
The stock gained in Wednesday's trade as Brent crude prices climbed closer to the $100-per-barrel mark amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
Aegis Logistics Gains 6%
Aegis Logistics Ltd also emerged as one of the top gainers in the Nifty 500 index. The stock was trading at ₹1,338 at 11:33 am, a rise of 5.51% from its previous close.

Top Losers for September 9: Infosys, Coforge and CarTrade Tech Fall Up to 4%
Infosys Falls 4%
Infosys emerged as the top loser in the Nifty 500 index on September 9, 2026. At 11:33 am, the stock was trading at Rs 1,038, a fall of 4.07% from its previous close of Rs 1,082.00.
The fall was due to sector-wide concerns over the US interest-rate outlook. Stronger-than-expected US jobs data has increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in September. Higher interest rates can make US companies more cautious about spending, particularly on discretionary projects.
Coforge Falls Over 3%
At 11:33 am, Coforge stock was trading at Rs 1,872.30, a fall of 3.98% from its previous close.
The fall came after Chairman Om Prakash Bhatt resigned following concerns raised by an internal audit over the company's board evaluation process. The sharp fall in Coforge has added to the broader weakness in IT stocks at a time when the sector is already under pressure from macroeconomic concerns.
CarTrade Tech Drops 3%
CarTrade Tech also emerged as one of the top losers in the Nifty 500 index on September 9. The stock was trading at Rs 3,064.70 at 11:33 am, reflecting a fall of 3.53%.
The fall was mainly related to market weakness and some profit booking in the stock.
