Brent Crude Soars to $100 per Barrel Level as Tensions Escalate in the Middle East
Last Updated: 9th September 2026 - 04:43 pm
The benchmark price of Brent crude has risen again to the $100 level, where it was last seen in July, as yet another set of attacks in the Middle East has drawn attention to the threat of potential shortages of oil.
The world benchmark for crude oil prices has been rising significantly recently, and at present it has increased by approximately 25% from early August and by more than 60% over the past year.
The reason behind the current rise is a prolonged conflict, already going on for six months, with no signs of any lasting settlement.
Middle East Conflict Escalates
The situation intensified on Tuesday after Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen launched attacks on several Saudi cities, drawing the US ally further into the conflict.
The escalation was not limited to Saudi Arabia. US forces struck multiple Iranian oil tankers, while Iran targeted a US base in Jordan and also launched attacks on ships.
With oil infrastructure and shipping increasingly caught up in the conflict, concerns over the availability and movement of crude from the region have grown.
That uncertainty has been reflected in oil prices. Brent’s return to $100 comes after a rapid climb from early August, when hopes of a permanent resolution to the conflict were stronger.
Brent Gains More Than 60% in 2026
The move to $100 also marks another milestone in what has been a sharp rise for crude this year.
Brent has gained more than 60% in 2026. More recently, prices have risen by about a quarter since early August as fighting picked up again.
Wednesday’s move puts the benchmark back at $100 a barrel for the first time since July 24, with developments in the Middle East continuing to drive sentiment in the oil market.
For now, the direction of crude remains closely tied to what happens in the conflict, particularly as attacks involving oil tankers, ships and countries across the region keep supply risks in focus.
