Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) shares gained 2% on Tuesday as the defence manufacturer prepared to mark a major production milestone at its Koraput division in Odisha.

The facility is set to deliver its 2,000th aero-engine, nearly six decades after it began contributing to India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing programme. The occasion will also see the launch of a second production line for Shakti engines, which power some of India’s indigenous military helicopters.

HAL shares were trading at ₹4,774 on the NSE at 11:32 am, up 2.01%.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to inaugurate the event.

HAL Adds Second Shakti Engine Production Line

Alongside the 2,000th-engine milestone, HAL is expanding its capacity to manufacture Shakti engines.

The company has invested ₹218 crore in a second production line at its Koraput division.

The additional capacity is intended to support growing requirements for indigenous helicopter programmes, including the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter.

The Shakti engine is used on India’s home-grown helicopter platforms, making the new production line an important addition as demand from these programmes increases.

HAL Koraput Unit Celebrates More Than 50 Years

Another highlight of Tuesday’s event will be the attention it brings to HAL’s Koraput unit and its contribution to India’s military aviation program over the years.

The unit has delivered its 2,000th aero engine in celebration of more than 50 years of contributing to India’s aerospace industry as well as serving the needs of the Armed Forces.

“The ministry of defense has been endeavoring to enhance the indigenous capability of aero engine production in light of the overarching strategy of making India self-reliant in terms of designing, developing, and producing defense systems instead of just buying them,” a spokesman of the MoD said.

Dhruv and Prachand Programmes in Focus

The new Shakti engine line is closely tied to two of HAL’s indigenous helicopter platforms.

The Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter is one of the platforms using the Shakti engine, alongside the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter.

As requirements for these helicopters grow, the second production line is expected to provide HAL with additional capacity to support their engine needs.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar and HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K are also scheduled to attend the event.

For HAL, the occasion brings together two developments at its Koraput facility: a production milestone built over nearly six decades and fresh investment aimed at supporting the next phase of India’s indigenous helicopter programmes.
