Nifty Weekly Expiry: Can Bulls Break the 22,600 Barrier as Put Writers Defend 22,500?
Last Updated: 13th October 2026 - 11:43 am
The Nifty 50 witnessed a recovery during Tuesday's morning session, climbing towards 22,565 after a weak start. However, with the weekly options expiry underway, derivatives positioning suggests that the index could face resistance as it approaches the 22,600 mark.
The latest options data highlights an interesting situation. While Put writers have established sizeable positions at strikes below the current market price, Call sellers remain active at higher levels. This has created a relatively narrow trading zone in which both sides are attempting to defend their positions.
At the time of observation, Nifty spot was around 22,570, with total Put open interest of 3,728.96 lakh against Call open interest of 2,608.67 lakh.
The higher concentration of Put positions has lifted the Put-Call Ratio (PCR) to 1.4394. Meanwhile, Max Pain is positioned at 22,550, close to the prevailing market level.
Together, these indicators suggest that the immediate market structure favours the downside being defended, although a sustained upside move will require Nifty to overcome the Call-heavy strikes.
Put Writers Strengthen Their Grip Below Current Market Levels
One of the most noticeable developments in Tuesday's option chain is the concentration of Put open interest around 22,500.
The strike has accumulated approximately 330 lakh in Put OI, making it the largest Put position among the displayed strikes. This is followed by significant outstanding positions at 22,400 and 22,300.
More importantly, fresh Put writing has accompanied the existing positions.
The intraday Change OI data shows the highest Put additions at 22,500, with substantial additions also recorded at 22,400, 22,450 and 22,550.
Such positioning indicates that traders selling Put options are expecting these levels to hold, at least during the immediate expiry session.
For Nifty, 22,550 becomes the first reference point on the downside, while 22,500 represents a more substantial support base.
However, heavy Put writing can also create vulnerability if the market moves against option sellers. Should Nifty fall decisively below 22,500, some traders may start unwinding their positions, potentially adding pressure to the decline.
In that situation, attention could shift towards 22,450 and subsequently 22,400.
Why 22,600 Could Decide the Next Intraday Move
Despite stronger Put-side positioning, the path higher is not entirely clear.
The options chain shows that Call open interest increases sharply at 22,600, where outstanding positions stand at approximately 260 lakh. This makes it the most important immediate resistance based on nearby Call concentration.
The 22,700 strike also carries considerable Call OI, while higher concentrations are visible around 22,800 and 23,000.
Intraday changes provide another important clue.
Fresh Call additions have been recorded at 22,600, 22,700 and 22,750, indicating that traders continue to build positions above the prevailing spot price.
This suggests that Call writers are not yet retreating despite the morning recovery in Nifty.
As a result, 22,600 becomes the first major test for buyers.
If the index moves above this strike and maintains its position, some Call sellers may begin reducing exposure. Such an adjustment could support a further advance towards 22,650–22,700.
A sustained breakout beyond 22,700, particularly alongside Call unwinding, would strengthen the case for a move towards 22,750–22,800.
On the other hand, repeated rejection near 22,600 could encourage additional Call writing and push the index back towards 22,550.
Rising PCR Shows a Shift in Options Positioning
The Put-Call Ratio has undergone a notable change since the beginning of Tuesday's session.
According to the intraday chart, the PCR started below 0.80 before rising steadily towards 1.44. The increase took place alongside Nifty's recovery from its opening lows.
A PCR of 1.44 means that outstanding Put positions exceed Call positions by a considerable margin.
In conventional derivatives analysis, such a reading is often associated with relatively supportive market positioning, particularly when the increase is driven by fresh Put writing.
However, the ratio must be assessed alongside strike-specific activity.
In the current setup, Put additions are concentrated mainly below the prevailing spot price, while Call writing is visible immediately above it.
This difference is important because it suggests that traders are building support underneath the market without necessarily expecting an unrestricted rally.
Furthermore, a high PCR can become a source of volatility if market direction changes abruptly. A sharp decline could force crowded Put positions to unwind, leading to faster price movements.
Therefore, the present PCR reading supports the recovery narrative but does not independently confirm a bullish breakout.
Max Pain Shifts Higher as Nifty Recovers
Another development worth watching is the movement in the Max Pain level.
During the opening part of the session, Max Pain was positioned around 22,400. As the market recovered and outstanding option positions changed, the level moved progressively higher before reaching 22,550.
With Nifty trading around 22,564.50 in the corresponding chart, the difference between spot and Max Pain is relatively small.
Max Pain represents the strike at which the aggregate theoretical payout to option buyers would be the lowest, based on the existing open interest distribution.
Its proximity to the market price suggests that the 22,550 region could remain an important reference point as expiry progresses.
However, Max Pain should not be interpreted as a fixed target towards which the index must move.
Sudden changes in open interest, institutional activity or broader market sentiment can cause prices to move substantially away from this level.
For now, the alignment of spot and Max Pain suggests that the market may experience periods of consolidation unless either side establishes a stronger directional advantage.
Nifty Expiry Trading Range: Levels That Matter
The derivatives structure currently places Nifty between a relatively strong Put base at 22,500 and immediate Call resistance at 22,600.
The 22,550 level acts as an intermediate reference because of its proximity to Max Pain and the presence of fresh Put additions.
On the downside, a sustained fall below 22,550 could bring 22,500 into focus. If this stronger support fails, the next levels to monitor would be 22,450 and 22,400.
On the upside, clearing 22,600 would be the first sign that buyers are overcoming immediate Call-side pressure. Beyond this, 22,650–22,700 could act as the next resistance region.
A decisive move above 22,700 may lead to short covering by Call writers, increasing the possibility of further upside towards 22,750–22,800.
Until a clear breakout or breakdown takes place, trading activity may remain concentrated around these heavily positioned strikes.
What Does the Derivatives Setup Suggest for Expiry?
Tuesday's options data presents a cautiously positive picture, but not an entirely one-sided bullish structure.
The PCR at 1.44 and substantial Put writing at 22,500 indicate that traders are defending lower levels. At the same time, fresh Call positions around 22,600 and 22,700 suggest that the upside could face resistance.
The movement of Max Pain towards 22,550 also reflects the change in the options structure during the morning recovery.
For the remainder of the expiry session, 22,500 remains the important downside support, while 22,600 is the immediate upside trigger.
A sustained move above 22,600 could improve sentiment and extend the recovery. Conversely, a decisive break below 22,500 may weaken the existing support structure and increase volatility.
The direction of fresh OI additions and unwinding at these strikes will be particularly important in determining whether Nifty extends its recovery or returns to consolidation.
