Sensex Falls 460 Points, Nifty Below 22,700 for Third Day; 426 Stocks Hit 52-Week Lows
Last Updated: 22nd October 2026 - 04:50 pm
Indian equity markets remained under selling pressure on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as rising crude oil prices and fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East dampened investor sentiment. The Sensex and Nifty extended their losses for the third consecutive trading session, while broader markets witnessed sharper declines.
The session began on a weak note, with the Nifty 50 opening at 22,687.75, down 123.60 points, and the Sensex starting at 73,343.33, lower by 366.36 points. Selling intensified during intraday trade, dragging the Nifty below 22,600 and pushing the Sensex down by more than 600 points before both indices recovered part of their losses.
By the closing bell, the Sensex had fallen 460.30 points, or 0.62%, to 73,249.39, while the Nifty 50 declined 123.70 points, or 0.54%, to 22,687.65. The weakness was not restricted to benchmark heavyweights, with declining stocks significantly outnumbering advancing shares across the market.
Rising Crude Oil Prices Put Indian Equities Under Pressure
The continuing increase in international crude oil prices remained a major concern for domestic investors. Brent crude climbed above $111 per barrel and approached $112 amid renewed fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East.
The rise followed fresh attacks by Yemen's Houthi group on targets in Saudi Arabia, including energy infrastructure. These developments heightened concerns about the stability of oil supplies from the region.
For India, which depends heavily on imported crude oil, sustained increases in energy prices can raise the import bill and contribute to inflation. Higher fuel and transportation costs can also affect companies that rely on petroleum products and related raw materials.
Businesses in sectors such as paints, tyres, chemicals and oil marketing are particularly exposed to changes in crude oil prices, with higher input costs potentially affecting their operating margins.
Inflation Concerns and Interest Rate Outlook Weigh on Sentiment
Apart from the rise in crude oil prices, the possibility of further monetary tightening added to market uncertainty.
Minutes from the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee meeting indicated that additional interest rate increases could be considered if inflationary pressures persist.
Higher borrowing costs can affect corporate investment, business expansion and consumer spending. The combination of expensive crude oil and the possibility of higher interest rates therefore remained a concern for equity investors.
Geopolitical uncertainty also continued after attacks on Saudi Arabian targets prompted the United States to order the departure of some diplomatic personnel and their families from the country.
Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Extend Their Decline
Selling pressure was more pronounced in the broader market, where midcap and smallcap stocks continued to underperform the benchmark indices.
The midcap index declined approximately 0.87%, while the smallcap index fell around 1.14%, reflecting continued weakness beyond large-cap stocks.
During the session, the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped below its 200-day moving average, an important long-term technical indicator. However, the index recovered from its intraday lows and finished above the 200-day moving average.
The broader market's underperformance indicated that selling was spread across companies of different market capitalisations rather than being concentrated in a handful of index heavyweights.
Sectoral Performance: Media, IT and FMCG Among Major Losers
Most sectors ended Thursday's session in negative territory, reflecting the weakness across domestic equities.
Of the 11 major sectoral indices tracked, nine closed lower, while Nifty Pharma and Nifty PSU Bank managed modest gains.
Nifty Media recorded the steepest decline, falling more than 2%. The Nifty IT, FMCG and Energy indices also ended over 1% lower.
The decline across several sectors indicated that concerns over inflation, higher operating costs and uncertain global conditions continued to influence market sentiment.
Market Breadth: 426 Stocks at 52-Week Lows
Market breadth reflected the extent of selling pressure across Indian equities on October 22.
Of the 3,642 stocks traded, 2,512 ended lower, while 1,026 advanced and 104 remained unchanged.
The weakness was also visible in the number of stocks touching their yearly extremes. As many as 426 stocks recorded fresh 52-week lows, compared with only 21 stocks reaching 52-week highs.
Furthermore, 187 stocks touched their lower circuit limits, while 61 stocks reached upper circuits. These figures highlighted the widespread selling pressure in the broader market.
Indian Rupee Falls to ₹94.82 Against US Dollar
The Indian rupee also came under pressure on Thursday, weakening by approximately 0.4% to close near ₹94.82 against the US dollar. The decline ended the domestic currency's eight-session gaining streak.
Higher crude oil prices and increased dollar demand from importers weighed on the rupee. Brent crude's rise above $111 per barrel added to concerns over India's energy import costs and inflation.
The currency had previously benefited from foreign inflows associated with the Jio Platforms IPO and measures taken by the Reserve Bank of India. However, rising oil prices and weak global equity markets offset some of that support during Thursday's session.
European Stock Markets Remain in Negative Territory
Selling pressure was also visible in European equity markets, with major indices trading lower on Thursday.
Germany's DAX was down 0.87% at 25,421.98, while the UK's FTSE 100 declined 0.40% to 10,709.94.
France's CAC 40 recorded a sharper decline of 1.27% to 7,821.33, making it the weakest performer among the three indices at the time of the observation.
The losses across European equities came amid rising crude oil prices, geopolitical concerns and weakness in global markets. European markets were still trading at the time these figures were recorded.
US Stock Futures Signal Weak Opening on Wall Street
US equity index futures were also trading lower ahead of Thursday's Wall Street session, extending the cautious trend visible across global markets.
Dow Jones futures declined 0.61% to 52,733.00, while S&P 500 futures fell 1.02% to 7,720.75.
Nasdaq 100 futures recorded the steepest decline, dropping 1.77% to 29,477.00.
The sharper fall in Nasdaq futures indicated pressure on technology-related stocks, with concerns surrounding artificial intelligence spending and corporate earnings adding to the broader market weakness.
