Investors Lose Over ₹5.5 Lakh Crore in a Single Day: Sensex Plunges 876 Points, Nifty Closes Below 22,900
Last Updated: 19th October 2026 - 04:44 pm
Indian equity markets ended Monday's trading session with sharp losses, bringing the two-session rally witnessed towards the end of the previous week to a halt. Selling pressure in private sector banks and IT stocks dragged the benchmark indices lower. Meanwhile, crude oil prices remained elevated and rebounded from their early lows to trade above $108 per barrel, adding to concerns over India's energy import costs.
The Nifty 50 opened on a flat note but witnessed sharp fluctuations during the first hour of trading amid weekly options expiry. As the session progressed, selling pressure intensified, pushing the index to an intraday low of 22,845. By the close, the Nifty settled at 22,888.95, down 257.20 points or 1.11%, while the BSE Sensex plunged 876.38 points or 1.17% to 73,852.90.
Banking stocks also came under pressure, with the Bank Nifty declining 355.90 points or 0.64% to settle at 55,488.10.
Meanwhile, the India VIX jumped over 5% to 14.77, reflecting increased volatility as the market reversed its recent gains.
Sectoral Performance: Nifty PSU Bank Emerge as Top Gainer
The weakness was visible across most sectors, with the Nifty PSU Bank index emerging as the only major sectoral index to end the session in positive territory.
The Nifty PSU Bank index advanced 2.46%, supported by buying interest in public sector lenders, even as private sector banking stocks faced selling pressure.
Among the major losers, the Nifty Financial Services index declined 1.58%, recording its sharpest single-day fall in nearly two weeks. The Nifty FMCG index also came under pressure, falling 1.44%.
IT stocks, which had led the market's recovery during the previous week, also witnessed profit-booking. The selling in banking, financial services and technology stocks weighed on the benchmark indices throughout the session.
Nifty Midcap and Smallcap Index Fall Over 1%; 169 Stocks Hit 52-Week Low
The decline was not restricted to frontline stocks, as selling pressure extended to the broader market. Both the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices ended Monday's session with losses of over 1%.
Market breadth remained firmly negative, with declining stocks significantly outnumbering advancing stocks.
Of the 3,664 stocks traded on the NSE, only 846 advanced, while 2,717 declined and 101 remained unchanged.
The weakness was also reflected in the number of stocks touching their yearly lows. During the session, 169 stocks hit their 52-week lows, compared with just 70 stocks reaching fresh 52-week highs.
Additionally, 144 stocks touched their lower circuit limits, while 84 stocks reached their upper circuit limits, indicating that selling pressure extended across several segments of the market.
Investors Lose ₹5.54 Lakh Crore as BSE Market Capitalisation Declines
The sharp fall in equity prices resulted in a substantial erosion of investor wealth during Monday's session.
According to BSE market capitalisation data, the combined market value of BSE-listed companies declined to approximately ₹467.93 lakh crore on October 19, compared with ₹473.47 lakh crore at the close of the previous trading session on October 16.
This represents an erosion of approximately ₹5.54 lakh crore in investor wealth in a single trading session, reflecting the extent of the sell-off across Indian equities.
Crude Oil Prices Rebound from Lower Levels, Trade Above $108
Crude oil prices remained an important concern for domestic equities on Monday, despite opening the session on a weaker note.
Oil prices initially declined after US President Donald Trump waived certain sanctions and tariff provisions relating to Russia. The decision raised expectations that additional Russian fuel supplies could enter the global market, potentially easing supply concerns.
However, the early decline proved short-lived, as crude oil prices recovered from lower levels and moved towards the day's highs, with Brent crude trading above $108 per barrel.
Despite the possibility of additional Russian supplies, continuing tensions in the Middle East have kept global oil prices elevated.
For India, which depends heavily on imported crude oil, sustained higher prices remain a concern as they can increase the country's import bill, add to inflationary pressures and raise costs for businesses.
European Markets Trade Lower; DAX, CAC 40 and IBEX 35 Fall Over 1%
Major European equity markets were trading in negative territory on Monday, October 19, reflecting cautious sentiment across the region.
Germany's DAX declined 271.11 points, or 1.06%, to trade at 25,351.50. France's CAC 40 witnessed a sharper decline, falling 106.51 points, or 1.34%, to 7,850.19.
Spain's IBEX 35 also came under pressure, dropping 272.86 points, or 1.41%, to 19,053.44.
Meanwhile, the broader Euro Stoxx 50 index slipped 60.18 points, or 0.97%, to 6,144.05.
All four indices were trading lower at the time of observation, with European markets still open for trading.
US Stock Futures Trade Higher Ahead of Wall Street Opening
In contrast to the weakness seen across European markets, US equity futures were trading in positive territory on Monday, with technology-related futures leading the gains.
Dow Jones futures were largely unchanged, edging higher by 5 points, or 0.01%, to 52,219.
Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures advanced 42.75 points, or 0.55%, to 7,747.
Nasdaq 100 futures recorded stronger gains, rising 349 points, or 1.19%, to 29,740.50.
