Sensex Weekly Expiry: Index Jumps 1,350 Points Above 74,000; Can It Reach 74,500?
Last Updated: 15th October 2026 - 01:49 pm
The Sensex continued its upward march on Thursday, October 15, climbing 1,373 points, or 1.89%, to trade at 74,159 around 1:14 PM. The index comfortably crossed the psychological 74,000 level, extending its gains into the afternoon session.
However, with the weekly options expiry taking place today, attention has turned towards the sustainability of the rally and the possibility of resistance emerging at higher levels.
The latest derivatives data offers some perspective. Heavy additions to put open interest (OI), alongside call unwinding at lower strikes, indicate a favourable positioning for buyers. At the same time, fresh call positions at higher strikes suggest that the next phase of the rally may face some hurdles.
Sensex PCR at 1.96: What Does the Options Data Indicate?
The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) for Sensex options currently stands at 1.96, marginally lower than the earlier reading of 2.05. Despite this decline, the ratio remains elevated, reflecting a substantial concentration of open interest on the put side
.As of approximately 1:01 PM, total put OI stood at 12.52 crore contracts, nearly double the call OI of 6.38 crore contracts.
The difference becomes more pronounced when examining the change in open interest during the session. Between 9:10 AM and 12:58 PM, put OI increased by 8.29 crore contracts, whereas call OI recorded an addition of 2.55 crore contracts.
This considerable accumulation on the put side is consistent with traders positioning for the index to hold above important support levels. However, the elevated PCR also requires careful interpretation. If the Sensex starts losing momentum and breaches key support levels, unwinding of these positions could accelerate the decline, particularly during expiry-day trading.
Max Pain Moves 200 Points Higher to 74,000
A significant change in the options structure is visible in the Max Pain level, which has moved upwards from 73,800 to 74,000.
This adjustment comes alongside the sharp rise in the underlying index and indicates that the distribution of outstanding options positions has shifted towards higher strikes.
Interestingly, the revised Max Pain level of 74,000 also corresponds with the strike carrying the maximum put open interest. The combination makes this level particularly relevant for traders tracking the remainder of the expiry session.
Although Max Pain is often used to assess potential expiry settlement zones, it does not necessarily dictate where the index will close. Strong buying or selling pressure can result in settlement away from this level.
Heavy Put OI at 74,000 Provides a Cushion
Looking at individual strike prices, put open interest has increased substantially across the 73,100–74,100 range.
Among these strikes, the most significant addition has occurred at 74,000, followed by 73,500. Both strikes also lead in terms of total outstanding put OI.
The accumulation around 74,000 suggests that this level has become an important near-term support area. Meanwhile, the sizeable positions at 73,500 indicate another support zone in the event of a larger pullback.
With the Sensex trading above 74,100, the immediate focus remains on whether it can preserve the 74,000 level during the final hours of expiry. Holding above this mark would keep the current bullish structure intact. Conversely, sustained trading below it could encourage unwinding of put positions and lead to increased intraday volatility.
Fresh Call Positions Emerge Around 74,300–74,500
While put-side positioning reflects support at lower levels, the call option data reveals where the index could encounter selling pressure.
Call OI has declined at strikes between 73,100 and 73,800, indicating that existing positions have been unwound as the market advanced. This reduction in call positions at lower strikes has accompanied the strong upward movement in the Sensex.
However, the positioning changes beyond 73,900, where fresh additions to call OI have been recorded.
The largest increase is visible at the 74,500 strike, followed by 74,300. Furthermore, total call OI begins to exceed put OI from the 74,200 strike onwards.
This distribution suggests that the 74,200–74,500 region could act as an important resistance area during the remaining trading session. In particular, the sizeable additions at 74,300 and 74,500 indicate that traders are building positions around these higher strikes.
For the rally to extend meaningfully, the Sensex would need to overcome these levels, ideally accompanied by a reduction in outstanding call positions.
Sensex Expiry Outlook: Can the Index Cross Scale to 74,500?
The derivatives setup continues to favour a positive near-term bias, although the upside may become increasingly challenging as the index approaches strikes carrying substantial call open interest.
The first hurdle is placed around 74,200, where call OI begins to dominate. Sustained trading above this level could encourage a move towards 74,300, followed by 74,500, which has witnessed the highest fresh call OI addition.
A move beyond 74,500, supported by call unwinding, could create room for further gains. However, failure to overcome the 74,200–74,500 zone may result in consolidation or some profit booking following the sharp advance.
On the downside, 74,000 remains the immediate support and the most important level to monitor. A sustained break below it could bring 73,800 into focus, while 73,500 represents the next significant support zone based on the concentration of put positions.
For now, the sharp rise in put OI and the upward shift in Max Pain indicate that support has moved higher along with the index. Nevertheless, fresh call additions above 74,200 suggest that traders are also preparing for resistance.
With only a few hours remaining before weekly expiry, the reaction around 74,000 on the downside and 74,200–74,500 on the upside will be particularly important. Any substantial unwinding of put positions near 74,000 or call positions at higher strikes could alter the intraday outlook and influence the direction of the Sensex into the close
