Indian equity markets witnessed a strong upward move during the morning session on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with Sensex recovering from the 73,000 region and approaching 73,850.

The recovery was accompanied by notable changes in the derivatives market. Put positions expanded across several strikes below the prevailing index level, while Call positions were reduced at lower strikes.

At the time of the available options snapshots, Sensex was trading between 73,842 and 73,858. The PCR stood at 2.0470, indicating that Put open interest was more than twice the Call open interest. Meanwhile, Max Pain had climbed to 73,700.
Although this positioning favours the bulls, the concentration of fresh Call writing at 74,000 suggests that extending the recovery may not be straightforward.

Derivatives Positioning Signals Improving Market Sentiment

A notable feature of Thursday's expiry session is the substantial difference between outstanding Put and Call positions.
Total Put open interest stood at approximately 1,194.09 lakh, compared with Call open interest of 583.34 lakh. This leaves a difference of nearly 610.75 lakh contracts in the displayed OI figures.

Such a wide gap explains the elevated PCR reading of 2.0470.

The intraday PCR movement offers additional perspective. The ratio started near 1.10 and gradually strengthened beyond 2.00 as Sensex recovered.

This indicates that Put-side positioning increased relative to Calls during the rally.

However, an unusually high PCR does not necessarily guarantee further gains. It can also reflect crowded positioning, making the market vulnerable to sudden reversals if Put writers begin exiting their positions.

For now, the combination of higher prices and rising PCR points towards a supportive derivatives structure.

Can Sensex Sustain Above 74,000?

Despite the stronger market sentiment, the Call open interest distribution suggests that sellers remain active at higher strikes.
The 74,000 strike has emerged as the most significant near-term obstacle, carrying approximately 52 lakh in outstanding Call OI.

Another sizeable concentration appears at 74,500, where Call OI stands near 39 lakh.

Between these levels, 74,200 and 74,300 also have considerable positions, at approximately 33 lakh and 29 lakh, respectively.

Importantly, the Change in OI data indicates that 74,000 attracted the largest fresh Call addition, estimated at 27 lakh.
Fresh additions at 74,200 and 74,300 further suggest that Call writers are positioning themselves against an uninterrupted rise.

Consequently, a move above 74,000 would become more meaningful if accompanied by a reduction in Call OI at that strike.
Such a development could allow Sensex to test 74,200–74,300, followed by 74,500. Without Call unwinding, however, the index could struggle to maintain gains above the psychological 74,000 mark.

Where Are Buyers Finding Support?

While Call writers are concentrating on higher strikes, Put writers have established sizeable positions below the current market level.

The 73,000 strike dominates the Put OI distribution, holding approximately 77 lakh in outstanding contracts.

The 73,500 strike follows with nearly 49 lakh, making it an important intermediate support reference.

Closer to the prevailing index level, meaningful Put positions are visible at 73,700 and 73,800.

This creates a sequence of potential support levels rather than dependence on a single strike.

For the immediate session, 73,800 is the first level to monitor. Below that, 73,700 becomes important because it also coincides with the current Max Pain reading.

If these levels fail to hold, the next meaningful downside reference is 73,500.

A deeper decline could bring 73,200 and eventually 73,000 into consideration, where the largest Put concentration may provide additional support.

Fresh OI Activity Reveals a Shift in Trader Positioning

The Change in OI data provides one of the clearest indications of how traders responded to the morning recovery.

Fresh Put additions were particularly aggressive at 73,000, where approximately 70 lakh contracts were added.

Considerable Put additions were also recorded at 73,500, 73,200 and 73,700.

At the same time, Call unwinding was visible across several strikes below the market, particularly between 72,800 and 73,500.
Together, these developments indicate that the options structure has shifted higher.

Nevertheless, traders have continued adding Calls around 74,000 and above, suggesting that the market still faces resistance despite improved sentiment.

Rising Max Pain Reinforces the Changing Structure

Another important development is the sharp upward adjustment in Max Pain.

At the beginning of the session, Max Pain was positioned around 72,800. As trading progressed, it moved higher through successive strikes before reaching 73,700.

With Sensex around 73,842, the index was approximately 142 points above this level.

The shift reflects changes in the distribution of outstanding options positions as the market rallied.

However, Max Pain represents a theoretical minimum-payout level for option buyers, not a forecast of where the index must settle.

Its movement is therefore best considered alongside price action, PCR and strike-wise OI changes.

Sensex Weekly Expiry: Levels That Could Decide the Next Move

The overall derivatives picture suggests that bulls have gained an advantage, although the upside faces an important test.

A sustained move beyond 74,000, accompanied by Call unwinding, could extend the recovery towards 74,200–74,300. The next significant hurdle would be 74,500.

Conversely, failure to hold above 73,800 could bring 73,700 into focus.

If 73,700 breaks decisively, particularly alongside Put unwinding, Sensex could retreat towards 73,500. The broader downside support remains concentrated around 73,000.

The immediate trading range is therefore placed at 73,500–74,000, with 73,000–74,500 representing the wider options-defined boundaries.

The elevated PCR, aggressive Put writing and upward movement in Max Pain favour a cautiously bullish outlook. However, whether this strength translates into another upward leg will largely depend on the index's ability to absorb Call-side resistance at 74,000 during Thursday's weekly expiry session.
