Continuous foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been selling Indian equities for the past year, but there were some companies that have experienced continuous foreign purchases, with the result that FII holdings increased every quarter for the last four quarters till June 2026.
Data from the latest shareholding disclosures shows that while overseas investors remained net sellers at the broader market level, they selectively raised stakes in companies across sectors including capital goods, banking, engineering, energy and manufacturing. The trend comes even as FIIs have sold nearly $38 billion worth of Indian equities over the past year amid elevated valuations, weak corporate earnings, global trade uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.
Select Companies Witness Steady FII Buying
Companies that recorded a consistent rise in foreign shareholding over the four-quarter period include MTAR Technologies share price, Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works share price, Virtuoso Optoelectronics share price, South Indian Bank share price, Polycab India share price, Committed Cargo Care share price, UPL share price, Shanti Educational Initiatives share price, Great Eastern Shipping Company share price, Waaree Energies share price, Hitachi Energy India share price, Vedanta share price, Shriram Properties share price, Bank of Maharashtra share price and Hindalco Industries share price, among others.
According to the available shareholding data, FIIs continued to accumulate these stocks despite the broader trend of reducing exposure to Indian equities.
MTAR Technologies Leads the Increase
Among all companies, MTAR Technologies share price recorded the largest increase in foreign ownership. FII holding rose by 17.2 percentage points to 24.8% in the June 2026 quarter from 7.6% a year earlier. Over the same period, the MTAR Technologies share price gained 240%.
Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works share price followed, with FII ownership increasing by 11.6 percentage points to 12.1%. Foreign holding in Virtuoso Optoelectronics share price also rose by 9.1 percentage points to 11.3%.
Over the past year, the Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works share price advanced 216%, while Virtuoso Optoelectronics remained broadly unchanged.
Performance Remained Mixed
Foreign ownership also increased between 5.9 and 7.8 percentage points in companies including South Indian Bank share price, Polycab India share price, UPL share price, Great Eastern Shipping Company share price and
Waaree Energies share price.
Among these stocks, UPL share price and Waaree Energies share price declined 1.6% and 8.3%, respectively, while the remaining companies generated returns ranging from 33% to 114% over the past year.
Commenting on the trend, G. Chokkalingam, Founder of Equinomics Research, said cumulative FII selling has largely been concentrated in large-cap stocks, while selective buying has continued in quality small- and mid-cap companies available at attractive valuations. He added that some stocks outperformed despite the broader weakness, although a few were driven more by market perception than fundamentals.
Broader Market Still Sees FII Selling
The broader trend remained negative during the June quarter. Of the 80 Nifty 100 companies that had disclosed their June-quarter shareholding data, 63 reported a decline in FII ownership, while only 17 registered an increase. Domestic institutional investors continued to offset part of the outflows, with mutual funds raising their holdings in 55 companies and reducing exposure in 24 others. The latest shareholding data indicates that while overall foreign participation has weakened, selective accumulation in specific companies has continued despite a challenging investment environment.
