Campbell Wilson, Air India’s CEO and Managing Director, has resigned, with the airline stating that a panel has been set up to find his replacement in the coming period, as per the official statement.

The airline said Wilson will continue in his role until a replacement is appointed, ensuring continuity during the leadership transition. His resignation comes before the completion of his five-year term after taking charge in 2022 following the airline’s privatisation under the Tata Group.

Transition Phase Begins

According to the airline’s statement, Wilson had informed Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran in 2024 about his intention to step down in 2026. Since then, efforts have been focused on stabilising operations and preparing the leadership team for a smooth transition.

Currently, Air India runs two brands, namely, full-service airline Air India and budget airline Air India Express, as part of their continued reorganisation process.

Operational Developments During Tenure

The airline introduced several initiatives during its tenure, which include the expansion of the fleet. In an internal communication cited by the company, Wilson stated that Air India added around 100 aircraft to its fleet and initiated modernisation of systems and onboard products.

The airline has also progressed with retrofitting legacy narrowbody aircraft and has begun receiving widebody aircraft with updated cabin interiors as part of its expansion plans.

Challenges Faced

Operational challenges have also characterized this stage and include the disruption of the global supply chain, delays in delivering aircraft, and higher expenses, among others.

An important event that occurred during this phase is the Air India Flight 171 crash in June 2025. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating on the Ahmedabad–London route crashed shortly after take-off, with 242 people onboard and additional casualties reported on the ground.

Leadership Change Ahead Of Expansion Phase

In his communication to employees, Wilson stated that the timing of his exit aligns with the airline’s next phase of growth, particularly ahead of large-scale aircraft deliveries expected from 2027 as part of its order pipeline.

According to the airline, the change of leadership has been done in such a way as to ensure smooth operations while ensuring future growth.

This is a leadership change amid the time that Air India is going through a structural change, with a new CEO set to be appointed within the coming months.
