Monday, January 26, will see both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) close their doors to all equity-related activity. Trading in equities, equity derivatives, interest rate derivatives, and currency derivatives will be suspended for that day. In addition, borrowing and lending operations in all types of securities will also be suspended until January 26. It is the first full holiday of 2026 for the primary exchanges.

With this holiday, market participants have prepared their respective trading strategies around the day off.

Affected Trading Segments

The Equity segment of NSE & BSE will experience a complete shutdown, there will be no buying or selling activity taking place on both exchanges. All forms of derivative trading, including futures and options, will also cease to exist on the same day.

All currency derivatives will not be traded during the day, thus resulting in both the AM and PM sessions on that date being closed.

Commodity Markets Impacted

There are no operations by either MCX or NCDEX on Republic Day. Trading of both non-ferrous metals and bullion is suspended, which results in decreased volumes traded largely in the wholesale market.

The market is normally adjusted for trading in anticipation of the Republic Day. As such, both exchanges have stated they will operate in accordance with the official list established for holiday trading in 2026.

Trading Disruptions and Patterns

All open orders will move to the first working day following the exchange's closure. Intra-day traders will miss opportunities to trade during the closure should the markets be volatile due to breaking news and outside events.
