Asian markets declined significantly on March 23, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and South Korea’s Kospi index losing up to 6% due to the escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict, which is now in its fourth week.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped nearly 5%, while the broader Topix declined 4.4%. In South Korea, the KOSPI fell more than 6%, and the KOSDAQ declined around 5%. Trading in Kospi 200 futures was temporarily halted after the index fell over 5%, as per exchange data.
Broad-Based Weakness Across Asia
Other regional markets also recorded losses. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 2.4%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index and Hang Seng Tech Index declined करीब 2% at the open.
Back in India, GIFT Nifty was down 298 points or 1.30% at 22,835, indicating a weaker opening for domestic benchmark indices.
Escalation In U.S.-Iran Conflict
The market decline follows escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. could target Iran’s power infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.
In response, Iranian officials said energy infrastructure across the Gulf could be targeted if military action continues. The Strait of Hormuz is an important global shipping route.
Global Market And Oil Update
Crude oil prices remained elevated but stable on March 23. Brent crude was at $111.97 per barrel, down 0.25%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.6% to $97.64 per barrel, according to Reuters.
In the U.S., stock futures remained subdued. The S&P 500 declined 0.1%, while the Nasdaq Composite futures fell 0.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained largely flat. For the week, all three indices ended lower, with the S&P 500 falling over 1.5% and the Dow and Nasdaq declining over 2%.
This is because the markets have declined in Asia, which is a result of the overall global markets being weak. The stock markets have fallen considerably, with tensions running high in global financial markets.
