Asian markets opened lower on June 17, with South Korean equities leading regional losses as investors assessed global monetary policy signals and monitored developments in the Middle East ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement.

South Korea’s benchmark Kospi fell 1.02% at the opening bell, while the Kosdaq index also traded marginally lower. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.20%, although the broader Topix index advanced 0.46%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.17% in early trade.

MSCI’s broad Asia-Pacific equity index slipped 0.1%, snapping part of the gains recorded during a three-session rally. Hong Kong markets appeared relatively stable, with Hang Seng futures quoted at 24,510, slightly above the benchmark index’s previous close of 24,493.95.

Focus Turns To Central Bank Decisions

Investor attention remained firmly on a busy week for global central banks. The U.S. Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, with market participants looking for indications on the future policy path.

Also receiving attention is the Bank of Japan, while the outlook does not expect much from it anytime soon. For the developed world, there is an expectation that policies will stay unchanged as inflation and growth continue to be monitored.

Oil Prices Rebound from Big Drop

Another factor that has affected sentiments is energy prices. Brent crude edged higher in early trading after dropping nearly 5% in the previous session and settling below $79 per barrel.

The decline in crude oil prices eased concerns that elevated energy costs could add fresh inflationary pressure globally. Lower crude prices have also prompted investors to reassess expectations regarding future interest-rate decisions by major central banks.

Meanwhile, U.S.-Iran diplomacy remains a topic of interest. Reports indicate that both countries are moving toward signing an interim agreement, although details of the arrangement and the timeline for restoring normal operations through the Strait of Hormuz remain uncertain.

Wall Street Ends Mixed Ahead Of Fed Meeting

Overnight, U.S. equity markets delivered a mixed performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 328.64 points, or 0.64%, setting new intraday and closing records. During the session, the index briefly crossed the 52,000 mark before ending just below that level.

In contrast, technology shares faced pressure. The S&P 500 declined 0.57%, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.15%. U.S. stock futures were largely unchanged in late trading. Futures linked to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 traded near flat levels, while Dow futures gained 47 points, or around 0.1%.

With major policy announcements due later in the day, investors across Asian markets are expected to remain focused on central bank guidance, inflation trends and geopolitical developments that could influence risk appetite in the coming sessions.
