Trading will be halted on January 15 for the BSE and NSE. The BSE and NSE (Bombay stock exchange and National Stock Exchange) issued circulars alerting investors that trading will not occur on either exchange in equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, or electronic gold receipts. Therefore, this is the first trading holiday of 2026 and is also consistent with the pattern established by the respective state municipal elections. Traders and investors are taking advantage of this unexpected break during the busy earnings season. Republic Day, which falls on January 26, is the second holiday in January. Including that holiday, the total number of days that Indian stock exchanges are closed for trading, excluding weekends, is sixteen.

Impact on Trading Segments

All trading segments will be impacted by the shutdown. No stocks may be bought or sold through stock trading. Equity derivatives will not be traded as well, which eliminates hedging options. Commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts will both remain inactive, limiting their effect on many broader portfolios.

Context of 2026 Holiday Schedule

To ensure order and promote the polling process for local elections within India's core financial centres (e.g. Mumbai) and, therefore, local elections taking place in Maharashtra, municipal elections cause closures of the exchanges. It is common practice to place the responsibility for Civic duty before economic gain, as illustrated by the revised circulars issued by both the BSE and NSE in coordination with local election authorities. In January, there are several holidays coming up in addition to the closure of the exchanges on Republic Day, January 26th, as part of nationwide holiday observances. With 16 holidays throughout the calendar year, the spacing of holidays allows for a balanced calendar, including festival days, national days, and regional celebrations, allowing investors the ability to take a step back and assess their overall strategy without the pressure of live trading.
