Defence stocks rose on April 21 as India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began a three-day visit to Germany aimed at finalising a bilateral defence industrial cooperation roadmap, according to the Ministry of Defence and PTI.

Shares across the defence segment recorded gains during the session, supported by expectations of new agreements on co-development and co-production of military platforms. The proposed roadmap is expected to create a framework for collaboration in key areas such as advanced defence manufacturing and technology partnerships.

Talks Focus On Industrial And Strategic Cooperation

In Berlin, Singh is scheduled to hold discussions with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius and other senior officials. The Ministry of Defence said the discussions will cover defence industrial collaboration, military-to-military engagement, and emerging areas including cyber security, artificial intelligence, and drone technologies.

Officials indicated that agreements related to defence industrial cooperation and training under United Nations peacekeeping operations may be signed during the visit. This move is part of ongoing attempts to bolster military cooperation between the two countries, as relations have become stronger over the past few years due to more exports from Germany to India in light of relaxed export policies.

Submarine Purchase Agreement In Focus

One major issue under consideration at the moment is an inter-governmental deal to provide six stealth submarines to the Indian Navy. According to PTI, German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is in price negotiations with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd and the Ministry of Defence for the project, estimated at about €5 billion.

The project is being promoted as a major "Make in India" effort, with domestic manufacturing expected to be a key part of it. During the session, shares of Mazagon Dock went up, showing that investors were paying attention to the talks.

Broad-Based Gains Across Defence Stocks

Other defence-linked companies also saw gains. Zen Technologies rose as much as 11%, while Data Patterns, Astra Microwave Products, and MTAR Technologies advanced up to 5%, 3.85%, and 3.1%, respectively. The Nifty India Defence index was trading about 1.3% higher during the session.

Bilateral Engagement Gains Momentum

The Ministry of Defence said the visit will also review ongoing cooperation and identify new areas for collaboration between the two countries’ defence industries. Singh is expected to meet representatives from Germany’s defence sector to promote joint development under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The visit comes after a gap of seven years since the last visit by an Indian defence minister to Germany in February 2019. The latest round of talks signals continued engagement between the two countries as they expand defence and industrial partnerships.
