The Centre and leading automobile manufacturers have defended the mandatory rollout of E20 petrol, stating that testing and service records do not support claims that the fuel causes widespread engine damage or operational issues in existing vehicles.

Industry Says Testing Found No Major Issues

At a joint media briefing with government officials, automobile manufacturers said years of evaluation and real-world usage indicate that vehicles can safely operate on E20 fuel. The move comes after concerns surfaced on social media over whether older vehicles, originally designed for lower ethanol blends, could experience corrosion, engine wear or reduced reliability.

Maruti Suzuki said it has serviced more than 15 million vehicles over the past two years that were not originally certified for E20 fuel and did not identify any fuel-related mechanical issues. Speaking at the briefing, Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer for Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, said the company had tested vehicles designed for E10 fuel on E20 across multiple performance parameters and found no significant concerns.

Other manufacturers, including Hero MotoCorp and Toyota Kirloskar Motor, also stated that older vehicles are capable of operating safely on the higher ethanol blend.

Fuel Efficiency Impact Acknowledged

Officials said E20 fuel may reduce fuel efficiency by around 3% to 3.5% because ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol. However, they added that the higher octane value of E20 allows manufacturers to develop engines with higher compression ratios, which could improve performance, drivability and torque in future vehicle models.

The rollout of E20 is part of India’s broader strategy to increase ethanol blending, reduce dependence on imported crude oil and expand the use of domestically produced biofuels. Lower import dependence could also help moderate the impact of fluctuations in global crude oil price movements over time.

Officials also clarified that several social media posts linking E20 to engine failures were not supported by available evidence. They said at least one widely circulated incident was traced to contaminated fuel rather than the ethanol blend itself.

E20 Remains Highest Approved Blend

Government representatives stated that E20 is currently the highest ethanol blend approved for regular petrol vehicles in India. They added that any proposal to introduce fuels with a higher ethanol content would require fresh technical studies, testing and regulatory approvals before implementation.

The transition to E20 has been implemented in phases across the country as part of the government’s ethanol blending programme. The initiative is intended to reduce fossil fuel imports, strengthen domestic ethanol production and improve energy security while limiting exposure to changes in international crude oil price trends.

Rollout Continues Across The Country

The government and automobile industry maintained that existing testing and field experience support the continued expansion of E20 fuel. While acknowledging a modest impact on mileage, officials said the blend remains compatible with vehicles currently operating on Indian roads and reiterated that future policy decisions on higher ethanol blends will be based on additional technical validation.
