India’s efforts to diversify fertiliser imports from various countries, such as China, Russia, and Canada, while at the same time maintaining ties with Iran, were revealed by senior government officials, as reported by Moneycontrol. The move by India to diversify fertiliser imports comes as global supply chains remain uncertain due to geopolitical tensions.

China, Russia Emerge As Key Supply Options

China is being considered as a swing supplier in the event of any supply disruptions in urea, whereas Russia continues to be part of India’s sourcing basket through alternative routes. Long-term supply arrangements with Canada are being increased.

Officials told Moneycontrol that India already follows a diversified import strategy and can increase procurement from major producers if disruptions arise in specific regions. They added that sourcing flexibility allows India to shift between suppliers depending on availability and logistical conditions.

The government is also continuing diplomatic engagement with Iran to ensure that fertiliser supplies are not affected by developments in West Asia, the report said.

Domestic Measures To Support Supply

Alongside import diversification, steps are being taken to improve domestic production and availability. According to officials, fertiliser companies have been asked to pre-pone maintenance shutdowns of plants to ensure higher output during the current period.

Efforts are also underway to promote alternatives such as nano-fertilisers and other technologies to reduce dependence on conventional imports over time.

Advance Planning And Global Tenders

The government has already initiated global tenders in advance to secure supplies. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during an inter-ministerial briefing that India has adequate fertiliser stocks for the Kharif 2026 season.

He added that tenders issued earlier have received strong responses and that most of the ordered quantities from multiple sources are expected to arrive by the end of March.

Officials reiterated that India remains in active contact with multiple countries to ensure supply continuity and avoid disruptions.

India’s fertiliser strategy now combines diversified imports, domestic production adjustments and early procurement planning to maintain availability during periods of global uncertainty.
