India and the U.S. are set to hold trade negotiations in New Delhi from June 1 to June 4 as the two countries work toward finalising an interim trade agreement and advancing discussions on market access, customs facilitation and non-tariff measures.
The latest round of talks comes after both sides indicated progress in negotiations. According to remarks by U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, reported by PTI, discussions have entered the final phase, with Indian officials recently visiting Washington to address the remaining issues under the proposed agreement.
The U.S. delegation will be led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while India will be represented by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, according to reports.
Focus On Trade And Market Access
Issues that will be discussed will include market access, and other means of making business and customs transactions easier for both nations.
India and the United States of America have developed their economic relationships greatly within the last twenty years. Bilateral trade has grown from approximately $20 billion to $220 billion during this period, reflecting stronger commercial engagement across multiple sectors.
Speaking during a recent visit to New Delhi, Gor said that trade growth between the two countries is increasingly being driven by investment, innovation and high-value industries, including digital trade, advanced manufacturing, energy and emerging technologies.
Cooperation In Emerging Sectors
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visited the U.S. last week to discuss expanding cooperation in areas such as healthcare sector, financial services, manufacturing, artificial intelligence and digital payments.
The two countries also recently agreed on a framework for cooperation in the critical minerals sector. The development comes at a time when global supply chains are facing challenges linked to restrictions on rare earth exports.
According to Gor, India’s expanding economy and infrastructure requirements present opportunities for collaboration in sectors including aviation, energy, research and development, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
Pharmaceuticals And Technology In Focus
Pharmaceutical sector cooperation is also expected to remain an important area of discussion. During his recent remarks, Gor noted that the U.S. sources nearly 40% of its generic medicines from India, highlighting the role of the Indian pharmaceutical sector in supplying critical healthcare products.
In addition, India is expected to participate in trusted supply chain networks covering areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum computing.
During his U.S. visit, Goyal stated that investor confidence, business stability and a predictable regulatory environment remain key priorities for the Indian government.
The discussions this week are expected to help shape the next phase of economic engagement between the two countries as they work toward concluding the proposed trade arrangement and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
