India and the U.S. are moving towards reaching an agreement regarding trade relations between the two states, with some ongoing discussions taking place in New Delhi. The final details of the deal have not been disclosed at the moment; however, various industry groups are paying close attention to the process of negotiating.

Such an agreement is expected to cover the issues of market access, tariff policy, customs procedures, and other matters related to trade facilitation. With the help of the deal, several export industries will benefit from cooperation with the U.S.

Pharmaceuticals Among Key Beneficiaries

The pharmaceutical sector is widely viewed as one of the major stakeholders in the ongoing discussions. Data from the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) shows that the United States remains the largest destination for India’s pharmaceutical exports.

Industry participants have consistently highlighted the importance of smoother regulatory processes and broader market access for sustaining export growth. Any measures that reduce procedural hurdles could support shipments from Indian drug manufacturers.

Textiles, Engineering Goods In Focus

Textiles and apparel exporters are also monitoring the talks closely. The U.S. is one of the largest overseas markets for Indian garment and textile products, and improved trade terms could strengthen the sector’s competitiveness against manufacturing hubs such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

Engineering goods represent another major export category. Exporters of machinery, industrial equipment, metal products and auto components have long advocated for lower trade barriers and greater policy certainty in international markets.

The Engineering Export Promotion Council has previously underlined the importance of predictable tariff structures for exporters serving the U.S. market.

Electronics And Auto Components Could Gain

Manufacturing of electronics products has emerged as a key strategic issue for India via production-based incentive programs aimed at boosting local manufacturing capability.

A business deal favoring greater market access to the U.S. market would facilitate the export of electronic goods while helping India achieve its overall goal of reinforcing its position within global value chains.

The same can be said about the manufacturing of automotive components where Indian firms have steadily increased their share in foreign markets and improved market access to the U.S. market could offer them further export opportunities.

Chemicals, Gems And Jewellery Await Clarity

Chemical and specialty chemical manufacturers are also expected to watch the outcome of the negotiations. Greater clarity on tariffs and trade rules could provide a more stable environment for exporters in the sector.

The gems and jewellery industry, which counts the United States among its largest export destinations, is another sector that could benefit from measures aimed at improving trade facilitation and market access.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on June 1 that most issues under negotiation had already been addressed, with discussions now focused on a limited number of outstanding matters. While the final structure of the agreement remains under discussion, sectors including pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering goods, electronics, auto components, chemicals and gems and jewellery are expected to remain among the most closely watched beneficiaries of deeper India-U.S. trade ties.
