Petrol and diesel prices were increased for the fourth time in less than two weeks, taking the cumulative rise in fuel rates to nearly ₹7.5 per litre across several cities. The latest revision pushed petrol prices in Delhi to ₹102.12 per litre, while diesel prices climbed to ₹95.20 per litre.

State-owned fuel retailers revised prices after international crude oil prices remained volatile due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy shipping route. Oil marketing companies had largely kept fuel prices unchanged for an extended period before resuming revisions earlier this month.

Mumbai continued to report among the highest fuel prices among metro cities, with petrol priced at ₹111.21 per litre and diesel at ₹97.83 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol prices stood at ₹113.51 per litre, while diesel was priced at ₹99.82 per litre. Chennai recorded petrol prices of ₹108.01 per litre and diesel prices of ₹99.78 per litre.

Crude Oil Prices Remain Key Trigger

Global oil prices have remained unstable in recent weeks following concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East. The rise in crude prices increased pressure on public sector oil marketing companies, which together control most of India’s fuel retail market.

The recent increase in domestic fuel prices comes after companies absorbed part of the higher import cost burden during previous months. India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, making domestic fuel pricing sensitive to movements in global oil benchmarks and currency fluctuations.

Oil prices, however, eased slightly in international markets on Monday after reports indicated progress in diplomatic talks involving the U.S. and Iran. Brent crude futures traded below the $100-per-barrel mark during Asian trading hours.

More Fuel Price Revisions Possible

Economists and market analysts have indicated that additional revisions in retail fuel prices cannot be ruled out if crude oil prices remain elevated. The recent hikes are aimed at narrowing losses incurred by oil retailers following the sharp increase in crude import costs.

Public sector fuel retailers, including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, account for the majority of India’s fuel retail network.
