The rupee gained strength against the U.S. dollar in the opening trade on July 10, as the trend in crude oil prices eased along with the dollar in international markets. The domestic currency began the session at 95.26 per U.S. dollar, improving by 12 paise from its previous close of 95.38, as lower energy prices and positive regional currency trends lifted sentiment.
Lower Oil Prices Offer Support
A decline in the crude oil price helped improve the outlook for the rupee at the opening bell. Softer oil prices are generally viewed as favourable for India, one of the world’s largest crude importers, as they reduce the country’s import bill and ease pressure on the current account.
The improvement came after international oil markets cooled from recent highs amid continued diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran. Although geopolitical tensions remain unresolved, the absence of a fresh disruption to energy supplies has helped stabilise global commodity markets in recent sessions.
The movement in the crude oil price also provided some relief to emerging market currencies, including the Indian rupee, after heightened volatility earlier in the week.
Dollar Weakness Aids the Rupee
According to Finrex, the rupee’s opening strength was also supported by a weaker U.S. Dollar Index, which traded around 100.61, along with gains in several Asian currencies. The brokerage said recent measures by the Reserve Bank of India to encourage dollar inflows and improve foreign exchange liquidity have helped strengthen market confidence.
Finrex added that exporters may increase dollar sales if the U.S. currency strengthens, while importers are likely to purchase dollars on declines. This could keep the rupee trading within a relatively stable range in the near term.
Asian Currencies Trade Mixed
Regional currencies delivered a mixed performance against the U.S. dollar during Asian trading hours. The Japanese yen led gains with an appreciation of 0.284%, followed by the Chinese renminbi, Malaysian ringgit, Philippine peso, Thai baht and Singapore dollar.
In contrast, the Indonesian rupiah recorded the sharpest decline among major Asian currencies, while the Taiwan dollar also weakened. The South Korean won remained broadly unchanged during the session.
The broad weakness in the U.S. dollar offered additional support to several regional currencies, including the rupee.
Market Focus Remains on Global Developments
While Friday’s opening reflected improved sentiment, currency markets continue to track developments in the Middle East and their impact on the crude oil price. Investors are also looking to the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy outlook and global currency moves for further direction.
For now, lower oil prices, a softer dollar and improving regional sentiment have provided near-term support to the Indian rupee, even as geopolitical risks remain an important factor for currency markets.
