The Indian rupee fell to an all-time low of ₹92.63 per U.S. dollar on March 19, breaching its previous record low of ₹92.48, as per market data. The currency declined by 26 paise compared to its March 17 close of ₹92.37.
Pressure From Oil Prices And External Factors
The weakening rupee also coincides with high crude oil prices in global markets and prevailing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which are putting pressure on importing nations like India. According to reports from Reuters, oil prices rose by 40% since the beginning of the West Asian conflict.
India is an importing country and requires more than 80% of its crude oil requirements, as per data provided by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Foreign Outflows Add To Weakness
The rupee value has fallen by more than 1.5% since the beginning of prevailing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Foreign investors are withdrawing almost $8 billion from India’s equity markets during this period, as per Reuters data.
RBI Intervention Limits Volatility
The Reserve Bank of India has intervened in the foreign exchange market to manage volatility and prevent sharper depreciation, as per RBI data. The central bank typically uses its forex reserves to smooth excessive fluctuations in the currency.
Year-End Demand And Trade Data Impact
The additional pressure on the Rupee came from the financial year-end dollar demand and weaker trade-related data, which resulted in an increased demand for the U.S. dollar's value in the domestic market.
The Rupee’s value is subject to the effects of global commodity prices, capital flows, and the overall demand for foreign currency, and the current scenario has resulted in a new record low value for the Rupee.
