The Indian rupee strengthened at the opening of trade on Monday, gaining 43 paise against the U.S. dollar after easing tensions between the U.S. and Iran reduced pressure on global crude oil prices. The domestic currency opened at 96.14 per U.S. dollar, compared with its previous close of 96.57.

The rebound in the rupee came as investors responded to a pause in military strikes between the U.S. and Iran over the weekend, which led to a decline of more than 5% in crude oil prices. Lower oil prices are generally seen as supportive for the Indian currency because India imports a significant share of its crude oil requirements.

Crude Oil Decline Supports Rupee

According to Finrex, the rupee was expected to open stronger near the 96.10 level against the U.S. dollar following the sharp fall in crude oil prices. The brokerage noted that the easing of geopolitical risks prompted investors to unwind the risk premium that had driven oil prices to multi-month highs last week.

Finrex also said exporters may wait for more favourable levels before selling U.S. dollars, while importers could use the stronger rupee to hedge their near-term payment obligations. The firm added that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to continue intervening to support the domestic currency during periods of weakness.

Asian Currencies Trade Mixed

Asian currencies showed a mixed performance against the U.S. dollar during early trading. The Thai baht led regional gains with an appreciation of 0.31%, followed by the Philippine peso, which rose 0.206%, and the Japanese yen, which gained 0.165%.

While the Malaysian ringgit appreciated by 0.13%, the Singapore dollar and the Chinese renminbi appreciated by 0.116% and 0.049% respectively.

Among the weaker currencies, the South Korean won declined 0.324%, making it the weakest performer in the region. The Indonesian rupiah slipped 0.15%, while the Taiwan dollar was largely unchanged, easing 0.009%.

Dollar Weakens Ahead Of Key Policy Signals

The U.S. dollar index weakened against major global currencies at the start of Asian trading after the pause in military action eased demand for safe-haven assets. The softer dollar, combined with lower crude oil prices, provided additional support to emerging market currencies, including the rupee.

The markets will also watch out for the next set of signals emanating from the Federal Reserve in terms of its monetary policies because expectations about the interest rate will have an impact on currency behavior across the world. Crude oil prices and geopolitical events, together with central bank commentary, will be crucial for the rupee.
