The Indian rupee strengthened by 6 paise to open at 93 against the U.S. dollar on April 7, supported by the continued unwinding of offshore positions by banks and ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision scheduled for April 8.
The domestic currency was trading at 93 in early deals after closing at 93.06 in the previous session, according to market data. The movement comes as banks adjust their positions in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s directive on net open positions (NOP-INR), with a compliance deadline of April 10.
RBI Measures And Market Positioning
RBI has instructed banks to ensure that their net open positions remain within certain levels, which has caused fewer arbitrage deals in the non-deliverable forwards (NDF) market. It has thus led to sales of dollars in the domestic market, helping the rupee in recent sessions.
The rupee had seen some volatility last week but now is trading in a range of about 30 paise in recent sessions. This suggests stability in the market as traders await further signals.
The MPC is due to meet on April 8. As per Reuters, investors are following the developments for information on interest rates, liquidity, inflation, and growth.
Global Factors And Oil Prices
World events continue to be one of the major issues that will affect the value of the rupee.. As per Reuters, Brent crude was seen around $111 per barrel, marking a rise of 1.4% from the previous trading session. Crude prices have surged following the flare-up of tension between West Asia countries on February 28, with prices surging by close to 50%.
The geopolitics of the region continue to be intense, with the United States giving an ultimatum of April 8 to Iran before blocking off the passage in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy lifeline.
External Pressures On Currency
India depends on foreign sources for over 85% of its crude oil needs, which means that fluctuations in international crude oil prices have a direct impact on the Indian rupee. If the price of crude oil rises, then the dollar requirement will rise, affecting the currency.
The market will remain under the influence of the RBI’s decision and the international market due to the impact of both domestic regulatory and external elements on the currency.
