On Thursday, July 16, the Indian rupee opened little changed at 96.25 per USD, amid concerns over increased oil prices, along with low market sentiment prevailing in the local market. The rupee has faced renewed pressure following the escalation of U.S.-Iran tensions, which has pushed oil prices higher and raised concerns over India’s import bill.
Rupee Nears Record Low
The rupee has declined 1.7% so far in July and is moving closer to its record low of 96.96 per U.S. dollar, recorded in May. The currency’s recent weakness comes after a period in which lower crude oil prices and measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India helped support foreign currency inflows.
Reuters reported that the benefit from those measures has now largely faded, leaving the rupee more exposed to movements in global oil prices and broader geopolitical developments.
The rupee’s performance has also been closely linked to the direction of crude oil prices. A decline in Brent crude towards $70 a barrel had earlier eased pressure on the domestic currency. However, the subsequent rise in oil prices following the renewed conflict in the Middle East has reversed some of that relief.
Oil Prices Add To Currency Pressure
Higher crude oil prices can increase India’s import bill, given the country’s dependence on overseas energy supplies. This can raise demand for U.S. dollars among importers and add pressure on the rupee.
Brent crude price rose to $85.28 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $80.02 a barrel, according to the data cited in the market update. The rise in crude has come amid concerns over potential disruptions to oil supplies and shipping routes in the region.
The renewed tensions have also weighed on broader investor sentiment with Asian markets lower in the session. The rupee will consequently continue to be driven by developments in the oil market and the wider geopolitical situation.
RBI Measures And Currency Outlook
The Reserve Bank of India had introduced measures aimed at encouraging dollar inflows, which had earlier provided support to the rupee. That support has weakened as crude oil prices moved higher and concerns over
the Middle East conflict intensified.
The domestic currency is now trading within sight of its previous record low. Any sustained increase in crude oil prices could add to pressure on the import bill, while developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict and changes in global capital flows are expected to remain important factors for the rupee’s movement.
With the rupee opening at 96.25 per U.S. dollar on Thursday, market participants will continue to track crude oil prices, foreign currency flows and geopolitical developments for further direction during the session.
