The Indian rupee appreciated by 39 paise to open at 95.37 against the U.S. dollar on Friday, June 12, benefiting from a sharp decline in global crude oil prices. The domestic currency gained ground after easing geopolitical concerns in West Asia reduced pressure on oil-importing economies such as India.
The rupee had closed at 95.76 against the U.S. dollar in the previous session. Friday’s opening reflected improved risk sentiment after crude benchmarks extended losses on expectations of progress in diplomatic discussions between the U.S. and Iran.
Crude Oil Retreats On Diplomatic Hopes
Brent crude declined to around $88.80 per barrel, its lowest level in nearly two months. The reason for the drop was that the president of the U.S., Donald Trump, indicated that an agreement on peace with Iran might come to fruition soon, indicating that it might end in a deal by this weekend.
This was quite different from what has been seen before, as recent fears were centered around escalation, leading to an increase in oil prices in previous weeks. The lowering of crude oil prices is typically favorable for the Indian economy, considering that India relies on importing much of its oil needs.
A moderation in energy prices can help ease inflationary pressures, improve the trade balance and reduce demand for dollars used in oil imports, factors that tend to support the rupee.
Global Markets React Positively
Prospects of lower tension levels in the Middle East boosted the mood of the international financial market as well. Stocks in Asia saw gains, while investments in safe havens declined.
On the other hand, U.S. government bond yields and the dollar weakened amid investor re-assessment of geopolitical risk and its influence on economic growth and inflation.
The softer dollar provided additional support to emerging-market currencies, including the rupee, during early trading hours.
Caution Persists Despite Optimism
Although the positive vibes from the ongoing talks were well received in markets, investors will be watching out for any real progress on the issue. Previous talks between Iran and the U.S. have seen times of euphoria but without an agreement coming out at the end.
This means that the foreign exchange market is likely to keep reacting to news from the talks as well as any developments in the international oil market.
In India, developments in the international oil price continue to influence the performance of the rupee. The drop in oil prices, if continued, would be supportive for the domestic currency, but any renewed volatility in the oil market may put pressure on the domestic currency again.
