Benchmarks Open Lower

At 9:30 am on February 28, the BSE Sensex was down 352.30 points, or 0.43%, at 81,896.31. The NIFTY 50 declined 113.95 points, or 0.45%, to 25,382.60, as per data available on the BSE and the National Stock Exchange of India.

The decline follows a mixed close on February 27, when the Sensex had settled 27.46 points, or 0.03%, lower at 82,248.61, while the Nifty rose 14.05 points, or 0.06%, to 25,496.55, according to official exchange figures.

Weak Global Cues

Overnight in the U.S., the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite ended lower, as per market data. The decline came after quarterly earnings from Nvidia, which projected first-quarter revenue of $78 billion.
Asian equity markets traded lower in early deals on February 28, mirroring losses in U.S. technology stocks, according to exchange data from regional bourses.

FII Selling And Volatility

Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹3,465.99 crore on February 27, as per provisional figures released by the National Stock Exchange. Domestic institutional investor activity data is released separately by the exchange.

The India VIX rose nearly 3% to 13.44 in early trade on February 28, according to NSE data. The volatility index reflects market expectations of near-term fluctuations based on Nifty options prices.

The combination of overnight declines in U.S. equities, lower Asian markets, foreign investor outflows and a rise in the volatility index weighed on domestic benchmarks in early trade. Further movement in the indices is expected to reflect additional global developments and domestic data releases scheduled for the day, as per the official economic calendar.
