Indian stock markets will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on account of Bakri Eid, resulting in a shortened trading week for investors and traders. The holiday will apply to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE across equity, equity derivatives and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.
The closure marks the second stock market holiday in May after exchanges remained shut on May 1 for Maharashtra Day. Trading will resume on Friday, May 29.
Commodity Exchanges To Follow Different Trading Timings
Commodity markets will observe a different schedule on May 28. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will remain closed during the morning trading session but will reopen for the evening session later in the day. In contrast, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will stay closed for both morning and evening sessions.
Commodity traders dealing in bullion, crude oil, metals and agricultural contracts are expected to adjust positions accordingly ahead of the holiday schedule.
Seven Trading Holidays Left In 2026
After the Bakri Eid holiday, Indian exchanges will observe seven more trading holidays during the remainder of calendar year 2026.
According to the exchange holiday calendar, markets will next remain shut on June 26 for Muharram. Other scheduled market holidays later in the year include Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24 and Christmas on December 25.
Indian exchanges had announced a total of 16 trading holidays for 2026 across equity, derivatives and SLB segments.
Weekend Holidays To Have Limited Market Impact
Some major occasions this year, including Independence Day on August 15 and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8, fall on weekends and therefore will not lead to additional weekday market closures.
However, despite Diwali Laxmi Pujan falling on a Sunday, stock exchanges are expected to conduct the customary Muhurat Trading session. The NSE and BSE generally announce the one-hour special trading window closer to the festival date.
Investors Track Global Developments Ahead Of Holiday
The market holiday comes at a time when investors continue to monitor geopolitical developments in West Asia, crude oil price movements and central bank policy signals globally.
Indian benchmark indices ended lower in the previous session amid rising geopolitical tensions and volatility linked to monthly derivatives expiry. There is also increased sensitivity within global markets towards events pertaining to energy supplies and inflation expectations.
Given that the domestic markets will be closed for Thursday, it is expected that the global cues will be followed along with changes in commodity prices.
