High-level negotiations between the United States and Iran wrapped up in Switzerland early Monday, with both sides agreeing to continue lower-level technical talks through the week and set up a “de-confliction cell” to address the conflict in Lebanon.

The development marks the beginning of a 60-day diplomatic process aimed at securing a lasting agreement to end hostilities. Mediators Pakistan and Qatar said the newly created mechanism would involve the Lebanese government and focus on ensuring the cessation of military operations in Lebanon.

Focus Shifts To Lebanon Conflict

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as a step forward and thanked Pakistan and Qatar for their role in facilitating discussions. In a post on X, he said the first major test of the understandings reached would be the functioning of the de-confliction mechanism intended to contain fighting involving Hezbollah and Israel.

The conflict in Lebanon remains one of the main obstacles to a broader settlement. Iran has linked progress in negotiations to an end to hostilities, while Israel has maintained that it will continue military operations and retain freedom to act against Hezbollah positions. Hezbollah, in turn, has stated that attacks would cease only if Israeli forces withdraw from Lebanese territory.

Although a ceasefire brokered over the weekend appeared to hold, neither Israel nor Hezbollah is a party to the U.S.-Iran talks, leaving uncertainty over the durability of the arrangement.

Technical Talks To Continue

According to statements issued by Pakistan and Qatar, lower-level discussions will continue in Switzerland throughout the week. These talks are expected to address technical issues before senior officials reconvene.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance conducted talks with Iranian officials comprising Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Araghchi, alongside senior negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iranian state media reported that the meeting lasted around 80 minutes.

A senior U.S. official familiar with the discussions said the talks covered mechanisms to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and measures to reinforce the ceasefire in southern Lebanon. The negotiations also included discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme, which Washington wants addressed amid concerns over possible military use. Tehran has repeatedly denied pursuing nuclear weapons.

Market Attention Remains On Energy Supplies

The talks began amid renewed tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran against supporting armed groups in Lebanon and threatened further military action. Iranian officials responded sharply, but diplomatic efforts resumed later in the day.

Iran reiterated over the weekend that it had shut the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. maintained that commercial shipping continued through the key energy route.

With crude markets closely watching developments in West Asia, the next phase of technical negotiations is expected to be important not only for regional stability but also for global energy supplies and financial markets.
