Market participants will track India’s foreign exchange reserves data, banking deposit trends and the ongoing India visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the week beginning May 25.
The developments come at a time when policymakers are monitoring currency volatility, crude oil prices and global geopolitical conditions following tensions in West Asia.
Marco Rubio Holds Talks With PM Modi
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is visiting India from May 23 to May 26 as part of efforts to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation between the two countries.
During discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rubio reviewed bilateral ties across defence, trade and regional security matters. The talks also focused on strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Rubio conveyed an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump for PM Modi to visit the White House.
The visit assumes significance as India and the U.S. continue discussions on trade-related matters, visa issues and energy security following volatility in global oil markets linked to the West Asia conflict.
Forex Reserves Data Due This Week
Investors will also monitor India’s foreign exchange reserves data scheduled for release on May 29.
According to Reserve Bank of India data, the country’s forex reserves declined by $8.094 billion to $688.894 billion during the week ended May 15. In the previous reporting week, reserves had increased by $6.295 billion.
India’s reserves had touched an all-time high of $728.494 billion in February before declining amid pressure on the rupee and higher crude oil prices.
The RBI has been actively intervening in the currency market through dollar sales to reduce volatility in the rupee following sustained pressure from capital outflows and geopolitical tensions.
The upcoming reserves data will be watched closely for indications on the pace of RBI intervention and the strength of India’s external sector position.
Deposit Growth To Indicate Banking Liquidity
Banking sector participants will also track deposit growth figures due later this week for signals on liquidity conditions and lending capacity.
Deposit growth in the banking system stood at 12.3% in the week ended May 1 compared with 12.2% in the previous reporting period.
The trend remains important for banks as they continue balancing credit demand with funding requirements. Deposit growth will also help in liquidity management and lending activities across the economy.
This week’s data will give us an insight into the stability of currency, liquidity in banks, and the overall macroeconomic condition amidst all the uncertainty prevailing in the global economy.
