Key Takeaways

  • Estimated Indian household assets increased from $11.3 trillion in March 2023 to about $16 trillion by March 2026.
  • Monthly mutual fund SIP contributions rose from ₹10,519 crore in October 2021 to ₹32,490 crore in September 2026.
  • SIP assets stood at ₹17.86 lakh crore in September and represented about 21.6% of mutual fund industry AUM.

India's household balance sheet has expanded sharply over the past three years, while systematic investing through mutual funds has become increasingly embedded in household saving behaviour.

Estimated household assets reached around $16 trillion by March 2026, compared with $11.3 trillion in March 2023, according to data cited by The Economic Times from Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund's research.

The composition also shifted. Gold's estimated share rose from 15.4% to 24.2%, while property's share declined from 51.3% to 47.6%. Bank deposits accounted for 11.2%, down from 14.1%, while equities remained broadly stable at 5.7%.

Part of these movements reflects changes in asset prices rather than fresh household allocation, particularly in gold. The data therefore does not necessarily indicate that households consciously moved the same proportion of new savings between asset classes.

Mutual fund SIP data, however, shows a clear increase in recurring financial investment. AMFI data puts monthly SIP contributions at a record ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, compared with ₹10,519 crore in October 2021.

September SIP assets stood at about ₹17.86 lakh crore, while total mutual fund industry AUM was ₹82.64 lakh crore at month-end.
