Iran is expecting a response from the United States to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz as early as Wednesday, following a fresh round of indirect discussions conducted through Qatari mediators in New York.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Qatar had brought forward new ideas during the discussions, which focused on Tehran’s conditions for resolving the current crisis and restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The proposals are being communicated to Washington, with Qatar expected to relay the US response back to Tehran. Araghchi indicated that he hoped the response would arrive by Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister is due to return to Tehran from New York, while communication through the Qatari mediators is expected to continue.

Iran’s Seven-Day Hormuz Proposal

The latest diplomatic exchanges follow Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for seven days if the United States meets certain conditions.

The conditions raised by Tehran include matters related to US military pressure and economic relief. The proposal was communicated through intermediaries, with Qatar playing a central role in exchanges with Washington. Pakistan has also been involved as an intermediary between the two sides.

Araghchi said communication through Qatari and Pakistani channels had existed earlier as well, but Iran’s latest proposal had given the exchanges greater significance.

During his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Araghchi sought to communicate Iran’s position on the regional conflict and the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has presented its proposal as a route towards resolving the crisis and reopening the waterway, provided its conditions are met.

US Had Rejected an Earlier Iranian Proposal

The latest discussions follow Washington’s rejection of an earlier proposal from Tehran.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Iran had sought sanctions relief and access to billions of dollars in frozen assets before negotiations over its nuclear programme. He also indicated that the US would eventually need to reach some form of agreement with Iran, while maintaining that President Donald Trump would keep other options available.

Araghchi challenged Waltz’s account and said the US ambassador had not seen Iran’s proposal.

Trump had earlier confirmed that American officials held discussions with mediators regarding Iran on Monday, but did not disclose details of those exchanges.

Strait of Hormuz Remains at Centre of Discussions

The Strait of Hormuz continues to be a major issue between Tehran and Washington.

Iran has tied the reopening of the waterway to conditions it wants the United States to meet, while Washington has rejected Tehran’s previous proposal.

At the same time, Iran has maintained that it remains open to diplomacy while preparing for the possibility that hostilities could resume.

For now, discussions are continuing through intermediaries, with attention turning to Washington’s response to the latest proposal communicated through Qatar.
