Indices plunge amid weak global cues while Rupee hits new lifetime low. US markets witnessed a bloodbath on Tuesday. Major Wall Street indices declined after trimming early gains and fell for a second straight day amid fears of inflation and tightened monetary policy. Fed Reserve policymakers promised further rapid interest rate hikes to combat high inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.56% while S&P 500 slipped 2.01%. The Nasdaq Composite also plunged 2.98%.

Expectedly, Indian benchmark indices opened in the red with comparatively small cuts. At 11:35 am, the Nifty 50 was trading at the 15,796.00 level, fell by 0.34%. On the Nifty 50 index, the top gainers were Grasim Industries Ltd, Reliance Industries and UltraTech Cement Company whereas; HDFC Life Insurance, IndusInd Bank and Hindustan Unilever Ltd were the top losers of the session.
Sensex was trading at a level of 53,003.05, declined by 0.33%. The stocks trading in the green were Reliance Industries Ltd, UltraTech Cement and Tata Steel Ltd. Hindustan Unilever Ltd, IndusInd Bank and Titan were the top draggers of the opening session. BP Capital Ltd and Gagan Gases Ltd were the top gainers on the BSE as both of these locked in a 20% upper circuit.
The rupee depreciated to an all-time low of 78.86 against the US dollar. On the other side, oil prices rallied for a third day as major producers Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stated that they have no spare capacity. BSE Oil and Gas was the top-performing sectoral index, led by Adani Total Gas Ltd and GAIL India Ltd.
