Nifty Logs Lowest Close in Nearly Three Months; Smallcap Index Closes at Fresh Record High
Last Updated: 8th September 2026 - 04:37 pm
The Indian equity market remained in a risk-off mode on Tuesday, with the frontline benchmark indices extending their declines for a second consecutive session. Persistent geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and a sharp rise in crude oil prices continued to weigh on investor sentiment.
The Nifty 50 opened at 23,743.10 and briefly moved up to an intraday high of 23,758.95. However, the index failed to hold its early gains and gradually slipped during the session. It touched a low of 23,623.10 before ending near the day's lower levels.
The Nifty 50 closed at 23,635.10, down 144.05 points, or 0.61%. This marked its lowest closing level in nearly three months.
The Sensex also remained under pressure and declined 555.23 points to settle at 75,577.58. Meanwhile, the Bank Nifty fell 0.54%, reflecting weakness across banking stocks.
Brent Crude Reached its Highest Level Since July 23
The rise in crude oil prices remained one of the key concerns for domestic and global markets.
Brent crude oil prices advanced 1.47% towards $99 a barrel, reaching its highest level since July 23. Reports of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants disrupting operations at Saudi energy facilities, including the 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery, added to concerns over global oil supplies.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz further increased fears of potential disruptions to crude shipments. At the same time, stronger crude imports by China provided additional support to oil prices.
For India, higher crude prices remain a key macroeconomic risk as they can increase the country's import bill, put pressure on the rupee and potentially affect inflation expectations.
Rupee Slides 0.36% Against US Dollar
The Indian rupee weakened sharply on Tuesday, declining 0.36% to 94.81 against the US dollar. It was the currency's steepest single-day fall in more than a month.
The decline came as Brent crude approached $99 a barrel amid rising geopolitical tensions and disruptions at Saudi energy facilities. Higher oil prices increased demand for dollars from importers, while renewed hedging activity also added pressure on the rupee.
Dollar sales by state-owned banks, likely undertaken on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India, helped limit the extent of the currency's decline.
Broader Markets Outperform Benchmarks: Nifty Smallcap Hits Fresh All-Time High
Despite the fall in the headline indices, the broader market displayed relative outperformance.
The Nifty Midcap 100 ended 0.17% higher, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.21% and closed at a fresh all-time high.
Nifty Media Gains Over 1%: PVR Inox Jumped Over 6%
Sectoral performance was mixed, with six of the 11 Nifty sectoral indices ending the session in positive territory.
The Nifty Media index emerged as the top performer, rising 1.31%. PVR INOX was among the major gainers within the segment, with its share price advancing more than 6%.
In contrast, the Nifty Financial Services index was the weakest performer, declining around 0.93%. The index extended its losses for a second consecutive trading session amid continued pressure on financial stocks.
European Equities Remain Under Pressure
European markets also traded lower as investors assessed the impact of higher crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions.
The DAX stood at 25,940.14, down 0.16%, while the FTSE 100 declined 0.06% to 10,815.12. France's CAC 40 was lower by 0.15% at 8,293.71.
The increase in oil prices has renewed concerns about inflation across major economies. Investors are also assessing whether prolonged energy-price pressures could complicate the path of monetary policy and delay interest-rate reductions.
US Stock Futures Show Mixed Signals
US equity futures presented a mixed picture ahead of the trading session.
Dow Jones futures declined 0.68% to 53,078, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.18% to 7,708.25. Meanwhile, Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.15% to 29,609.25.
During the session, Dow futures traded between a high of 53,130 and a low of 52,931.
Investors are likely to continue monitoring developments in crude oil and the Middle East, along with their potential impact on inflation, interest-rate expectations and global risk appetite.
