Vedanta Power: Nifty 500 Index Inclusion Drives Trading Spike but Fundamentals Remain Key
Last Updated: 24th September 2026 - 11:54 am
Vedanta Power shares rose more than 5% in intraday trade on September 23, days before the company is set to enter the Nifty 500 as part of the latest index reshuffle.
The stock was trading 5.6% higher at ₹32.83 on the BSE at 12:15 pm, taking the company’s market capitalisation to ₹12,837.80 crore. During the session, it moved between a low of ₹31.27 and a high of ₹33.44.
The rise comes ahead of Vedanta Power’s inclusion in the Nifty 500 from September 30, 2026. The company will also enter the Nifty Smallcap 250, Nifty Midsmallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 500.
The index changes bring fresh attention to a stock that has remained under pressure since the Vedanta demerger.
Vedanta Power to enter Nifty 500 from September 30
The firm Vedanta Power is set to be included in the Nifty 500 index when the new composition of the index becomes effective from September 30.
Other firms in the Vedanta Group, which include Vedanta Iron and Steel, Vedanta Oil and Gas, and Vedanta Aluminium Metal, will also be joining the index.
While inclusion in indices makes a firm visible to institutional investors and may lead to passive investment in the company, it is noteworthy that the report does not give any information regarding the amount of passive investment that Vedanta Power will receive after its inclusion. The report does not even give any information on post inclusion trading volume figures.
Shares rise 5.6%, but remain below recent highs
Vedanta Power’s September 23 rally comes after a difficult period for the stock.
At 12:15 pm, the shares were trading at ₹32.83, up 5.6%. The intraday high stood at ₹33.44, while the low was ₹31.27.
Despite the day’s rise, the stock has declined 25.82% over the past three months and 9.53% over the preceding month. It has fallen around 25.9% since the Vedanta demerger.
Vedanta Power touched its 52-week high of ₹52.49 on July 3, 2026. Its 52-week low of ₹30.44 was recorded on September 18, just days before the latest rise.
Technical trend remains under pressure
The September 23 recovery has not yet reversed the broader weakness visible in the stock’s recent price movement.
Technical analysis cited in the report showed Vedanta Power continuing to form a lower-low and lower-high pattern, indicating that selling pressure remained present despite the latest rally.
The share price also remained below its falling moving average, while its relative strength index was below the neutral level of 50.
The technical assessment cited ₹38 as an important level, with the broader setup remaining negative while the stock trades below it.
Index entry brings visibility, not a change in business fundamentals
Vedanta Power’s addition to the Nifty indices changes its position within the market’s benchmark structure, but does not by itself alter the company’s operating performance.
The research view cited in the report described index inclusion as a possible near-term liquidity and sentiment catalyst rather than a standalone fundamental trigger.
Beyond the index change, factors such as Vedanta Power’s earnings trajectory, power demand, capacity expansion and balance-sheet position remain relevant to its medium-term performance.
For now, the measurable market reaction has been the September 23 rise in the stock. The extent of any passive flows or increase in trading activity resulting specifically from the Nifty 500 inclusion will become clearer only after the revised index composition takes effect on September 30.
