Will there be any brokerage charges for an IPO investment?

When you’re new to the IPO market, one of the first practical questions that comes up is about cost. Specifically, investors often ask, are there brokerage fees for IPO investment? The good news is that, in most cases, applying for an IPO doesn’t attract any brokerage charges at all.
Here’s why. Unlike regular stock market trades, IPO applications are handled through the ASBA system or via UPI based payments directly through your bank or broker’s platform. Your funds are blocked until allotment, meaning no actual buying or selling happens during the application stage. Since brokers earn commissions mainly on executed trades, there’s usually no fee involved in simply applying.
However, that doesn’t mean there are zero charges involved in applying for an IPO across the board. Some platforms may include small convenience or transaction fees, though these are rare and typically nominal. It’s always wise to check your broker’s or bank’s specific terms before applying.
The cost of investing in an IPO through a Demat account might also include minor maintenance or annual account fees, depending on your service provider. These are not IPO specific but are part of the regular cost of holding a Demat account. Additionally, when your allotted shares list on the stock exchange and you decide to sell them, standard brokerage charges for trading will apply.
To put it simply, applying for an IPO is one of the most cost efficient ways to invest in the equity market. The ASBA and UPI systems were designed to keep the process investor friendly and almost free from hidden costs.
If you’re applying for multiple IPOs over time, keeping your Demat account active and linked correctly to your bank is the only ongoing requirement. No middlemen, no handling fees, and no unnecessary deductions, your money remains in your control until allotment.
In essence, IPO investment is a low cost entry point for both new and seasoned investors. Just ensure that your application is made through a legitimate bank or brokerage platform. Once your shares are credited, you can trade them like any other stock, at standard brokerage rates only when you choose to sell.
