Bank Nifty Surges By More Than 1% On April 21

The banking sector was one of the major beneficiaries on April 21, with the Nifty Bank index and other significant sub-indices surging more than 1%, outperforming benchmarks amidst strong participation from both private and public banks, according to Moneycontrol.

At around 10:00 am, the Sensex was up 500 points or 0.64% at 79,021, while the Nifty gained 137 points or 0.56% to 24,502. The Nifty Bank index rose 1.09% to 57,200, while both the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices increased by more than 1%, as per market data.

Private And PSU Banks Lead Gains

Among private lenders, Axis Bank rose about 1.4%, while ICICI Bank gained over 1%. HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank traded around 1% higher, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also recorded gains, according to Moneycontrol.

Public sector banks also moved higher. Union Bank of India was up about 1.6%, while Canara Bank climbed by 1.4%, and Bank of Baroda was more than 1% higher. The State Bank of India was among the gainers, helping to lift the index.
Broad Market Movements

The rise in banks was accompanied by an uptick in the broad market as well. There were more advancers than decliners in the broad market, as per the exchange statistics.

Sectoral indices also showed that sectors like realty and autos, which focus on the domestic market, were stronger.

Global Cues And Oil Prices

Global developments supported market sentiment. Asian markets rebounded after reports indicated possible participation by Iran in discussions with the U.S., according to Moneycontrol.

Crude oil prices showed signs of easing after earlier volatility linked to supply concerns in West Asia. Brent crude traded near the mid-$90 per barrel mark, while WTI crude also declined, as per Reuters.

Volatility Indicators

The India VIX declined more than 4% during the session, indicating reduced volatility in the market, based on exchange data.

The changes in banking stocks, along with gains in broader indices and less volatility, show that financial stocks were still active during the trading session on April 21.
