Gift Nifty indicated a muted opening for Indian equities on Friday as investors awaited the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy announcement while tracking developments in global markets, commodity prices and geopolitical tensions.

Gift Nifty was trading near 23,495 in early deals, about 17 points below the previous close of Nifty futures, pointing to a subdued start for benchmark indices. The signal comes after domestic markets ended largely unchanged on Thursday, with investors refraining from taking aggressive positions before the outcome of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

The Sensex closed 13.84 points higher at 74,360.01, while the Nifty 50 gained 10.95 points to settle at 23,416.55 in the previous session.

RBI Policy Decision In Spotlight

The RBI’s three-day MPC meeting concludes on June 6, with the policy decision scheduled later in the day. Market participants will closely monitor the central bank’s stance on interest rates, inflation, liquidity conditions and the rupee.

The policy announcement assumes significance amid elevated crude oil prices and continued uncertainty surrounding global economic conditions.

Asian Markets Trade Lower

Equity markets across Asia weakened on Friday morning. Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.82%, while the broader Topix index slipped 0.07%.

South Korea witnessed sharper losses, with the Kospi falling 6.25% and the Kosdaq dropping 2.41%. Futures linked to Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also pointed to a weaker opening.

The decline followed weakness in technology-related stocks globally and cautious positioning before key economic events.

Mixed Finish On Wall Street

U.S. markets ended with a mixed performance overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 874.86 points, or 1.73%, to close at 51,561.93.

The S&P 500 gained 0.41% to end at 7,584.31, and the Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.09% to 26,830.96. Several semiconductor and technology stocks saw sharp moves, contributing to divergence among major indices.

Commodities And Currency Markets

Gold prices edged lower, with spot gold trading at $4,462.22 per ounce. U.S. gold futures for August delivery were quoted at $4,489.

Crude oil prices remained relatively stable after falling sharply in the previous session. Brent crude traded at $95.24 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was near $92.94 per barrel.

In currency markets, the U.S. dollar index remained close to 99.43, supported by safe-haven demand amid geopolitical uncertainty. The Japanese yen traded near 160 against the dollar, while the euro was around $1.1612.

Geopolitical Developments Remain On Radar

Investors kept tabs on Middle East developments too. Reports of ongoing diplomacy with Iran and fresh tensions between Israel and Lebanon still topped the list of factors influencing risk sentiment.

With the RBI policy coming later and mixed signals from global markets, traders will stay locked into what central banks say and keep an eye on external events to navigate the near-term market direction.
