The NSE Indices, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), in a press release dated June 17, has said that 11 new sectoral indices have been launched by them, thus taking the total number of sectoral indices from them to 34.

The newly launched indices cover sectors including power, capital goods, telecommunications, construction, consumer services, retail, healthcare and financial services, according to a statement issued by NSE Indices.

Expanded Sectoral Coverage

The newly introduced benchmarks are Nifty Power, Nifty Capital Goods, Nifty Telecommunications, Nifty Construction, Nifty Consumer Services, Nifty Commercial & Transport Services, Nifty Retail, Nifty Hospitals, Nifty NBFC, Nifty Housing Finance and Nifty Insurance. With their inclusion, the total number of sectoral indices offered by NSE Indices has increased to 34.

Wider Industry Representation

In its release, NSE Indices stated that the expanded suite is designed to provide broader and more detailed coverage of both established industries and emerging areas of the economy.

The index provider noted that the new benchmarks enhance sectoral representation by covering a wider range of businesses across India’s economic landscape. The expansion also reflects the growing importance of specialised sectors that have gained prominence in recent years. Sectoral indices are commonly used by investors to track the performance of specific industries and compare returns against broader market benchmarks.

Potential Use In Investment Products

NSE Indices said the newly launched benchmarks are expected to serve as performance measures for asset managers and institutional investors. They may also be used as underlying indices for passive investment products.

The index provider added that exchange-traded funds (ETFs), index funds and structured investment products could use these benchmarks as reference indices in the future.

The launch comes as passive investing continues to gain traction in India, increasing demand for specialised benchmarks that track individual sectors and themes.

By expanding its sectoral index lineup, NSE Indices has widened the range of market indicators available to investors, fund managers and product issuers, while offering additional tools to track performance across a broader set of industries within the Indian economy.
