Summary:

Parle Industries shares extended gains for a second consecutive session on Thursday, rising nearly 5% after retail investor interest surged following the viral Modi-Meloni “Melody” video despite the company having no connection with Parle Products or Melody toffees.

Shares of Parle Industries continued their upward move on May 21, gaining nearly 5% after hitting the upper circuit in the previous trading session as social media activity around the “Melody” toffee brand spilled over into the stock market. On the BSE, the stock was trading at ₹5.51, up ₹0.26 or 4.95% during the session.

The rally follows a viral video from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Rome, where Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was seen referring to a toffee gifted by Modi during their interaction.

In the clip circulating widely on social media, Meloni says Modi had gifted her a “very, very good toffee,” to which the Prime Minister responded with “Melody.” The interaction revived the popular “Melodi” meme trend online and renewed discussions around the confectionery brand’s long-running “very, very chocolaty” advertising slogan.

No Link With Melody Brand

Despite the sharp rise in the stock, Parle Industries has no association with Melody candies or Parle Products, the privately held consumer goods company that owns brands including Parle-G, Melody, Monaco, KrackJack and Hide & Seek.

The rally appeared to be driven largely by confusion among retail investors and increased online attention linked to the similarity in the company’s name.

Parle Industries operates independently and has business interests unrelated to packaged foods or confectionery.

Company Background

The company was incorporated in 1983 as Express Bottlers Services Pvt Ltd before later being renamed Parle Software Ltd.

It was initially associated with the Parle-Bisleri group but now functions as a separate entity with operations spanning infrastructure, real estate and paper waste recycling activities. Trading in the stock picked up as the social media frenzy built earlier this week.

Social Media Trends Affect Trading Activity

Such episodes have been witnessed in the past in Indian equities, where retail participation and viral trends on social media have led to sudden movement in stocks with familiar or closely related names.

The latest rally in Parle Industries comes amid heightened retail investor activity in low-priced stocks and small-cap counters.

The stock came into focus in the market in the last two trading sessions due to the similarity in branding and the popularity of the viral video, although the company has no operational or financial link with Parle Products.

The move also shows how social media trends and viral content are increasingly impacting short-term trading patterns in some parts of the stock market.
