Daily Price Revision By Oil Marketing Companies

Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised every day at 6 AM by oil marketing companies. The three major public sector OMCs responsible for retail fuel pricing are Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).

These companies operate a large network of petrol pumps across the country and update retail fuel prices based on global crude oil prices and currency exchange rate movements.

Retail fuel prices in India have remained largely stable since May 2022 after the central government and several states reduced fuel taxes. Since then, daily revisions have continued, although prices in most cities have not changed frequently.

Factors That Influence Petrol And Diesel Prices

Several factors influence petrol and diesel prices in India. Global crude oil prices remain the primary factor because crude oil is the main raw material used in the production of petrol and diesel.

India imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirement. As a result, movements in the value of the Indian rupee against the U.S. dollar also affect the cost of importing crude oil and the final retail price of fuel.

Taxes imposed by the central and state governments form a substantial share of retail fuel prices. Since state taxes vary across regions, petrol and diesel prices differ from one city to another.

Refining costs, transportation expenses and distribution charges also contribute to the final retail fuel price paid by consumers at petrol pumps across India. Oil marketing companies continue to update prices daily in line with these factors
