Summary:

The rupee strengthened in early trade on June 25 as a sharp decline in crude oil prices improved sentiment for the domestic currency, even as the U.S. dollar remained firm and Asian currencies traded mixed.

The Indian rupee opened stronger against the U.S. dollar on June 25, benefiting from easing crude oil prices that have fallen below levels seen before the recent Iran-related conflict. The domestic currency opened at 94.30 per U.S. dollar, up 35 paise from the previous close of 94.65.

Crude Oil Decline Supports Rupee

The rupee’s advance came as global crude oil prices continued to retreat, reducing pressure on India’s import bill. Lower energy costs typically support the domestic currency by easing concerns around inflation and external balances.

Finrex said the rupee was likely to remain supported by crude oil trading near $72.50 per barrel, despite strength in the U.S. dollar. The brokerage indicated that the domestic currency could hold around the 94.30 level during the session.

Dollar Strength Limits Gains

While lower oil prices provided support, gains in the rupee were capped by a stronger U.S. dollar. The Dollar Index was trading around 101.56 as investors continued to assess the outlook for U.S. interest rates and awaited key inflation data.

Finrex noted that exporters had already used recent market levels to increase dollar sales, while importers could find opportunities to purchase dollars if the currency pair moves toward the 94.10–94.20 range. The brokerage also indicated that the Reserve Bank of India may remain active near those levels.

Asian Currencies Trade Mixed

Currency markets across Asia presented a mixed picture on June 25. The Indonesian rupiah recorded the steepest decline among major regional peers, falling 0.52% against the U.S. dollar. The South Korean won weakened 0.32%, while the Chinese renminbi slipped 0.27%.

The Taiwan dollar was largely unchanged, easing 0.04%. Among gainers, the Malaysian ringgit rose 0.27%, making it the strongest-performing Asian currency during the session. The Philippine peso was up 0.12% and the Thai baht added 0.07%. The Japanese yen and Singapore dollar posted modest gains of 0.03% and 0.02%, respectively.

Focus on Global Economic Signals

The U.S. dollar remained on track for its strongest monthly performance in nearly a year as investors continued to position for relatively higher U.S. interest rates amid signs of resilience in the American economy.

For the local currency, crude oil prices, demand for dollars, and risk appetite are expected to continue playing an important role in driving market activity over the coming days.  The rupee opened higher in early trade against a backdrop of mixed regional currencies as oil prices eased and external pressures eased as well.
