The Indian rupee opened 3 paise higher at ₹96.17 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, July 15, supported by softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data. Despite this, the local currency faced selling pressure due to the high crude oil prices and the prevailing geopolitical tensions.
Crude Prices Remain A Key Pressure Point
The rupee’s early gains came after the latest U.S. inflation data eased concerns about an imminent interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. A reduced likelihood of near-term monetary tightening in the U.S. provided some support to emerging-market currencies, including the rupee.
However, the crude oil price remained elevated amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Brent crude was trading near $86 per barrel during Asian trading hours, significantly above the level of around $70 per barrel recorded two weeks earlier.
Higher crude prices can increase India’s import bill and raise demand for U.S. dollars from importers, adding pressure on the rupee. The rupee share price keyword is not applicable to currency markets, while the crude oil price remained central to the day’s currency movement.
Rupee Had Slipped Below 96 Per Dollar
In the previous trading session, the rupee weakened beyond the ₹96-per-dollar level despite intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank reportedly sold dollars in both the spot and non-deliverable forward (NDF) markets to manage pressure on the domestic currency.
This was because the depreciation of the rupee in spite of the efforts of the RBI in the market showed that there was still pressure from outside forces like the rising price of oil and geopolitical situations.
External Forces Continue To Dominate Market Focus
The Indian rupee is facing new pressures owing to the fact that there is an increase in the price of crude oil alongside increased tensions in the Middle East.
At the same time, the latest U.S. inflation data has provided some relief by reducing immediate concerns around a potential Federal Reserve rate hike. This has offered limited support to the rupee at the start of Wednesday’s session.
The currency market is likely to remain focused on movements in the crude oil price, developments in U.S. monetary policy expectations and geopolitical tensions as traders assess the rupee’s direction through the session.
