The shares of the major oil marketing companies in India suffered a setback on Thursday as hints were given about the possible imposition of harsh tariffs on nations that continued to import oil from Russia. The threat of not being able to import oil from Russia at cheaper rates led to a sudden crash in the market, with HPCL and BPCL being the major sufferers.

The NIFTY 50 closed lower by 263.90 points (-1.01%) at 25,876.85, dragged down by heavy selling in index heavyweights. Sharp losses were seen in HINDALCO (-3.78%), JIOFIN (-3.57%), WIPRO (-3.29%), ONGC (-3.29%), and TECHM (-3.03%). Other notable decliners included TCS (-3.02%), DRREDDY (-2.92%), ADANIENT (-2.85%), LT (-2.70%), and JSWSTEEL (-2.67%). On the positive side, ETERNAL (+0.78%), SBILIFE (+0.53%), ICICIBANK (+0.50%), and BAJFINANCE (+0.13%) provided limited support.
