Market closes higher; Sensex soars more than 130 points, Nifty50 levels out near 17,700, while metals shine. 

The major equity indices finished the tumultuous session on Friday with respectable gains. After touching the day's low of 17,597.85 in the early trade, the Nifty finished a little under the 17,700 mark. Shares of media, healthcare, and IT fell, while those of oil & gas, metals, and real estate rose.

Positive market breadth was present as 1,822 shares increased and 1,570 shares decreased on the BSE and 151 shares were unchanged overall. 

The S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, increased 130.18 points, or 0.22%, to reach 59,462.78. To 17,698.15, the Nifty 50 index increased by 39.15 points or 0.22%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased by 0.39%, while the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased by 0.15% in the overall market. 

The Nifty Media index continued its three-day losing run by dropping 1.41% to 2,043.25. In three trading sessions, the index fell 2.85%. Trent increased by 3.26%. The retail division of the Tata Group reported a combined net profit of Rs 130.51 crore in the first quarter of FY23 as opposed to a net loss of Rs 126.59 crore in the same period of FY22. After the company's consolidated net profit increased 16% to Rs 1,933 crore on a 41% increase in revenue to Rs 28,042 crore in Q1 June 2022 over Q1 June 2021, Grasim Industries' share price increased by 1.31%.  

The Dow Jones futures were up 170 points, signalling a successful start to today's trading session on the US stock market. Following significant gains in the previous session, European shares rose while Asian stocks were neutral on Friday as investors processed the US inflation news. 

On Thursday, US stocks battled to find direction before ending in a range. The Nasdaq Composite fell 74.89 points, or 0.58%, to 12,779.91, while the S&P 500 fell 2.97 points, or 0.07%, to 4,207.27. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 27.16 points, or 0.08%, to 33,336.67.
