What Are Mutual Fund Units?
Last Updated: 10th November 2025 - 12:53 pm
When you invest in a mutual fund, you don’t buy shares of individual companies directly. Instead, you purchase units of the mutual fund. Each unit represents your proportionate ownership in the fund’s overall investments — which could include shares, bonds, and other securities.
Think of a mutual fund as a large pool of money collected from many investors. This pool is then managed by professionals who invest it across different assets. The number of units you hold shows how much of that pool belongs to you.
How Are Mutual Fund Units Calculated?
The price of each unit is determined by its Net Asset Value (NAV). The NAV reflects the total market value of all the fund’s assets after deducting liabilities, divided by the total number of units.
NAV per unit = (Total Assets – Total Liabilities) / Total Number of Units
For example, suppose a mutual fund has total assets worth ₹100 crore and liabilities of ₹2 crore, with 10 crore units in circulation. The NAV per unit would be ₹9.80. If you invest ₹9,800, you’ll receive 1,000 units.
NAVs are updated at the end of each trading day based on the closing market prices of the fund’s holdings. When the value of those investments rises, the NAV — and therefore the value of your units — increases too.
How Do Mutual Fund Units Work?
When you invest, your money buys units at the current NAV. Over time, as the mutual fund earns dividends, interest, or capital gains, your investment value changes. You can redeem (sell) your units back to the fund at the prevailing NAV whenever you wish, subject to the fund’s exit load or lock-in period (if any).
Most mutual funds in India offer growth and dividend options. Under the growth option, your returns stay invested and reflect in the rising NAV. Under the dividend option, you may receive payouts from the fund’s profits from time to time. Here, a mutual fund calculator will help you figure out your projected returns from a mutual fund based on your investment horizon, monthly investment amount, and expected returns.
In Summary
Mutual fund units represent your share in a professionally managed investment portfolio. They allow Indian investors to start small, diversify their money, and benefit from market growth — without the need to track or trade individual stocks themselves.
