In India, trading in the stock market is not a 24/7 activity. It happens during fixed hours on weekdays, with specific windows for different types of sessions. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced investor, understanding these timings can help you plan your trades better and avoid missing out on opportunities.

Let’s break down the daily schedule of the Indian stock market in a way that’s easy to understand.

What Are the Market Hours in India?

Trading happens from Monday to Friday, except on official stock market holidays declared by the exchanges. The market hours are common across both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Here’s a quick snapshot of the trading hours:

Session Time Details
Pre-open Session 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM Market prepares for trading
Regular Trading Hours 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM Main session where most trading happens
Post-close Session 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM Order placement after market hours
Block Deal Window 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM
2:05 PM – 2:20 PM
For large trades between institutional investors

Trading in the equities segment takes place on all days of the week except Saturdays and Sundays and trading holidays declared by the Exchange in advance. The stock market timings are mainly divided into three sessions. They are Pre-opening, Regular trading and Post closing session. The timings of the equities segment are:

Understanding Each Trading Session

1. Pre-Open Market (9:00 AM – 9:15 AM)

This 15-minute slot allows investors to prepare for the day. It's divided into three mini-phases:

Time What Happens
9:00 AM – 9:08 AM You can place, change or cancel buy/sell orders.
9:08 AM – 9:12 AM Orders get matched based on demand and supply. Prices are calculated.
9:12 AM – 9:15 AM Transition phase. No new orders or modifications allowed.

This session ensures stability by setting an opening price through a multilateral order matching system before the market opens for regular trading.

2. Regular Market Session (9:15 AM – 3:30 PM)

This is the main window where most buying and selling of shares happens. It works on a bilateral order matching system—prices are decided by the ongoing demand and supply in real-time.

This session is usually more volatile, as investor reactions, news, and economic indicators all play out live in the market.

3. Post-Close Session (3:30 PM – 4:00 PM)

Once regular trading ends, the market goes into a winding-down phase.

Time What Happens
3:30 PM – 3:40 PM Exchanges calculate the day’s closing price using a weighted average of prices from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
3:40 PM – 4:00 PM Investors can place orders for the next day at the closing price. These orders are confirmed if matched.

4. Block Deal Session

This special trading window is available only for large-volume trades, typically conducted between big institutions.

  • Morning Block Deal Window: 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM
  • Afternoon Block Deal Window: 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM

These trades are negotiated privately and reported to the exchange within the session.

Currency Market Timings

For those interested in currency trading, here are the timings:

  • Operating Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday to Friday)

Unlike equity markets, there are no pre- or post-market sessions here. However, keep in mind that trading currency derivatives requires actual exposure to foreign currency, as mandated by the RBI.

Final Thoughts

Getting a grip on when the Indian stock market opens, closes, and transitions through its various phases can make a real difference to how you trade or invest. Each segment of the trading day is designed with a specific function in mind—whether it's price discovery in the morning, active buying and selling during market hours, or placing bids after hours.

If you’re mindful of these windows and use them to your advantage, you’ll be better positioned to time your trades smartly and stay ahead in the market.
