India–U.S. Trade Deal Stalls as Deadline Nears; Markets Turn Cautious
Last Updated: 29th July 2025 - 03:01 pm
The much‑anticipated interim trade deal between India and the United States is facing increasing delays, straining investor sentiment and prompting caution in Indian equity markets. Despite weeks of negotiations, key sticking points remain unresolved as critical deadlines loom.
Negotiations Mired in Core Differences
A report by Live Mint says that talks between the two countries have lagged due to disagreements over tariffs and market access. India has resisted U.S. pressure to reduce duties on agricultural and dairy imports, citing domestic political sensitivities and potential harm to its farming sector. At the same time, the U.S. has stalled on easing tariffs on Indian steel, automobiles and pharmaceuticals—a package India has sought relief from.
The July 9 deadline for a 90‑day suspension of U.S. reciprocal tariffs is imminent. However, Indian Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal recently returned from Washington without a breakthrough, after five rounds of talks. A U.S. delegation is expected in New Delhi to continue discussions, but analysts now see a deal before August as unlikely.
India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the progress as “fantastic” but underscored that agriculture and dairy remain non‑negotiable areas. He also flagged openness to limited sectoral agreements if a full pact cannot be concluded in time.
Market Impact and Capital Flows
The delay in securing a trade deal has triggered a negative reaction in Indian stock markets. On Tuesday, July 29, both the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex opened lower and hovered near six‑week lows, weighed down by persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows. The Nifty slid roughly 0.29% to 24,610 and Sensex fell about 0.33% to 80,620 in early trading.
Foreign investors sold ₹60.8 billion in Indian equities on Monday—the largest single‐day outflow since late May. Most mid‑cap and small‑cap stocks traded flat or weakly as market sentiment deteriorated.
According to analysts, the uncertainty around a possible deal is causing investors to delay large trades. Relaxed global tension after a separate U.S.‑Japan trade pact offered limited respite, but broader markets still suffered due to trade deal ambiguity.
Risks and Outlook Ahead
Market strategists warn of a "Multiple setbacks"—a stalled trade deal, foreign capital flight, and weak corporate earnings—posing ongoing headwinds for Indian equities. While economic fundamentals remain stable, sustained growth will depend on solid Q1 FY 26 earnings and renewed investor confidence.
A temporary “mini‑deal” focused on specific sectors may provide short‑term relief. However, experts caution that such a limited pact could defer rather than resolve core issues, offering only a "Temporary relief".
Despite political rhetoric and diplomatic optimism, India has maintained it will not conclude any agreement purely to meet deadlines. Government sources emphasise that the nation’s interest is paramount, even if negotiations extend beyond early July.
Conclusion
The delay in finalising an India–U.S. trade deal, particularly over agriculture, dairy and automotive tariffs, is intensifying uncertainty in Indian markets. Such a deal would also signal not only long-term economic stability but also global integration, key factors for long-duration foreign investors," Aditya Sood, a fund manager at InCred AMC, told Mint. With the U.S. deadline nearing and no interim resolution in sight, foreign capital is withdrawing, and equity performance is muted. Investors now await both improved corporate earnings and clear signals in negotiations to restore confidence in market momentum.
